Job summary

Ochsner Health in New Orleans seeks an inpatient Pharmacy Technician to support pharmacists and ensure safe, accurate preparation and delivery of sterile admixtures for adult and pediatric units.

Requirements include a high school diploma, 6 months of pharmacy technician experience, and current certification; ASHP sterile product cert within 90 days. Knowledge of aseptic techniques, chemotherapy safety, data entry, and pharmacy equipment is essential.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
• 6 months of experience as a Pharmacy Technician is required.
• Current Pharmacy Technician Certification issued by the Board of Pharmacy in the state of practice is required.
• ASHP Sterile Product Preparation Certificate within 90 days of hire.
• Five years of IV Production experience will be accepted in lieu of Sterile Product Preparation Certificate, but the certificate must be obtained within 90 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Assist pharmacists and technicians to maintain an efficient medication distribution system.
• Accurately prepare sterile admixture products using aseptic techniques.
• Perform mathematical calculations for sterile preparations.
• Operate and maintain specialized pharmacy equipment (IV safety software, barcode software).
• Clean and maintain IV room as per schedule.
• Communicate effectively with patients and care teams; adhere to safety guidelines for handling chemotherapy.

This job is a member of the inpatient pharmacy team, and work directly with the department pharmacists to maintain and improve pharmacy services for the assigned areas. Responsible for preparing and delivering all sterile admixture products for adult and pediatric inpatient areas at the Medical Center under the supervision of pharmacist. Education

• Required - High School Diploma or equivalent

Work Experience

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

• Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of patient information.
• Must have working knowledge of pharmaceutical mathematics.
• Must have working knowledge of sterile technique and demonstrate aseptic technique proficiency.
• Must have working knowledge of safety guidelines for handling chemotherapy.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process.
• Must be proficient with Windows-style applications, various software packages specific to role and keyboard.
• Skills to operate standard pharmacy and office equipment.
• Strong interpersonal skills.

Job Duties

• Assists pharmacists and other technicians to maintain an efficient medication distribution system in order to provide safe and efficient patient care.
• Accurately prepares sterile admixture products, such as intravenous snap-ons, large volume parenterals, syringes, chemotherapy, & bulk manufactured products using techniques utilizing aseptic techniques and proper pharmaceutical procedures (>400/shift OR 100% of shift dedicated to preparation of sterile products and chemotherapy).
• Accurately prepares sterile admixture products using mathematical calculations.
• Appropriately operates and maintains specialized pharmacy equipment (IV safety software, barcode software).
• Charts all scheduled maintenance designed to ensure sterility according to protocol.
• Performs daily, weekly, monthly, and terminal cleaning of the IV room.
• Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.
• Other related duties as required.
