Job summary

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, rebuild, assemble, and test hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders, pumps, motors, valves, and power units.
• Evaluate condition, diagnose failures, identify parts, prepare labor estimates, and complete repairs timely.
• Read and interpret hydraulic schematics, work orders, manuals, and diagrams to support diagnosis and repair.
• Disassemble, clean, measure, inspect, and reassemble components with appropriate tools and gauges.
• Perform functional, pressure, and leak testing; ensure safe operation before returning to service.
• Document work performed, parts used, findings, results, and recommendations per procedures.
• Maintain tools, workspace, and inventory; support field service and on-site repairs as needed.
• Coordinate with sales, customer service, and operations to ensure timely repair and customer satisfaction.
• Follow safety, lockout/tagout, PPE, and handling procedures for hydraulic fluids and components.
• Share hydraulic knowledge and provide informal guidance to coworkers as appropriate.
• Provide professional responses to customer requests and maintain positive service attitude.
• A Level III may mentor less experienced team members on standard practices.

Description

The Hydraulic Technician is responsible for inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing, rebuilding, testing, and documenting hydraulic components and systems, including hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders, pumps, motors, valves, power units, PTOs, and related fluid power equipment. This role requires strong mechanical aptitude, hydraulic product knowledge, safe work practices, and the ability to diagnose equipment failures, identify required parts, complete quality repairs, and support customer needs in a shop or field service environment.

Salary: $25- $35 Hourly | DOE

Primary Duties:

• Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, rebuild, assemble, and test hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders, hydraulic pumps, motors, valves, DC power units, PTOs, high-pressure components, and related hydraulic equipment.
• Evaluate equipment condition, determine probable cause of failure, identify required parts, prepare labor estimates, and complete repairs accurately and timely.
• Read and interpret hydraulic schematics, work orders, technical specifications, parts diagrams, service manuals, and related documentation to support diagnosis and repair.
• Disassemble, clean, measure, inspect, and reassemble hydraulic components using appropriate tools, measuring devices, test equipment, and shop procedures.
• Perform functional testing, pressure testing, leak testing, and quality checks to verify safe and reliable equipment operation before return to service.
• Document work performed, parts used, inspection findings, test results, and repair recommendations in accordance with company procedures.
• Maintain, organize, and care for tools, equipment, work areas, and inventory used in hydraulic repair and service activities.
• Assist with field service work, customer technical support, installations, troubleshooting, or onsite repairs as needed.
• Coordinate with sales, customer service, purchasing, operations, and other departments to support timely repair completion and customer satisfaction.
• Follow all safety, quality, environmental, and shop procedures, including proper lockout/tagout practices, pressure safety precautions, PPE requirements, and safe handling of hydraulic fluids and components.
• Develop, maintain, and share hydraulic product knowledge and provide technical support or informal guidance to coworkers as appropriate.
• Address customer requests, concerns, and repair-related questions professionally, using a positive, solution-oriented approach.
• A level III may provide informal guidance, coaching, or mentoring to less experienced team members on standard assembly practices and procedures.

Education & Work Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent required; technical school, vocational training, fluid power, hydraulic systems, diesel, mechanical, industrial maintenance, or related skilled trades coursework preferred.
• Requires 2–4 years of related hydraulic repair, fluid power, mechanical repair, industrial maintenance, equipment service, or shop technician experience; level may vary based on demonstrated knowledge and experience.
• Experience repairing or rebuilding hydraulic cylinders, pumps, motors, valves, power units, PTOs, or related fluid power components preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Solid working knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic principles, fluid power components, hydraulic circuits, seals, fittings, hoses, cylinders, pumps, motors, valves, power units, and related repair practices.
• Ability to troubleshoot hydraulic systems and components, identify failure causes, determine repair requirements, and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
• Ability to read, interpret, and follow hydraulic schematics, parts diagrams, service manuals, work orders, technical instructions, and inspection or testing documentation.
• Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, measuring instruments, diagnostic tools, test stands, lifting equipment, and standard shop equipment used in hydraulic repair and maintenance.
• Strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and ability to perform precise inspection, assembly, measurement, and testing activities.
• Basic math skills and ability to verify measurements, dimensions, tolerances, clearances, pressure ratings, and component fit using appropriate tools and references.
• Ability to identify quality or performance issues, make routine adjustments, complete repairs accurately, and elevate complex technical concerns when needed.
• Ability to communicate effectively, collaborate with coworkers and other departments, and interact professionally with internal and external customers.
• Ability to prioritize assigned work, meet deadlines, complete documentation accurately, maintain clean and organized work areas, and support reliable onsite attendance.
• May demonstrate leadership skills by providing informal guidance, coaching, or mentoring to less experienced employees on hydraulic repair practices and standard work procedures.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

• Work is performed primarily in a production, electrical assembly, panel building, pneumatic assembly, testing, and shop environment with exposure to electrical components, wiring, tools, moving equipment, shop noise, sharp materials, production equipment, test stands, and pressurized systems.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, climb, crouch, kneel, and use hands and arms for extended periods while performing wiring, assembly, inspection, testing, troubleshooting, documentation, and production support activities.
• Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 70 pounds, with assistance or mechanical lifting devices as appropriate.
• Frequent use of hand tools, power tools, wiring tools, measuring instruments, diagnostic equipment, computers, and standard office equipment.
• Use of required personal protective equipment and adherence to applicable safety, quality, electrical assembly, and production procedures is required.
• Onsite regular and reliable attendance is required.
• Up to 10% travel as needed by land or air.
