Job summary

Denver Public Schools seeks an L1 apprentice-level technician to support equipment maintenance for district playground facilities. Under supervision, you will perform inspections, install, repair, and maintain playgrounds and courts, and assist with welding as needed.

A valid Colorado CDL and NPSA certification are preferred, with dual responsibilities to ensure safety and uptime across sites. Applicants must have a high school diploma, live in Colorado, and meet physical requirements.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent minimum required.
  • Valid Colorado Driver's License with insurability; ability to obtain/maintain CDL.
  • Certification as a Certified Playground Inspector from NPSA; welding certifications preferred.
  • Live in Colorado and meet physical requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with and perform functions of L2/L3 level positions.
  • Conduct annual district-wide playground safety inspections per CPSC standards.
  • Install/playground and athletic equipment per CPSC guidelines.
  • Repair and maintain playgrounds, play areas, courts, and support equipment.
  • Perform minor welding repairs as needed.
  • Communicate/coordinate with site staff and shop personnel.
  • Diagnose repairs using blueprints and safety codes.
  • Prepare/clean job sites with safety considerations; dispose of waste.
  • Review work orders, prioritize and procure supplies via district PO system.
  • Cross-train in at least one other trade as an apprentice.
  • Assist with snow removal on a 24-hour on-call basis.
  • Respond to emergencies 24/7.

What You'll Do
  • L1 (Apprentice)
    • Under the direction L2 or L3 technicians: Assists with and or performs all functions of the L2 (Journeyman) and L3 (Master or Multi-Skilled) level position.
    • Performs annual District-wide playground equipment safety inspection to monitor compliance with Colorado School Districts Self Insurance Pool requirements, and U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC) Playground Standards.
    • Installs different types playground, play and athletic equipment in accordance with the CPSC guidelines and related athletic sport rules of play.
    • Installs, repairs, and maintains playgrounds, play areas and courts, support equipment.
    • Performs minor welding repair and maintenance.
    • Communicates and coordinates with staff at work site and with other shop staff.
    • Diagnoses repairs; modifies and performs repairs using blueprints; and considering playground safety codes.
    • Prepares and cleans up job site, taking into consideration safety concerns of self and others, and disposes of waste and flammable materials.
    • Reviews work orders, prioritizes, and determine supplies for repair and purchases supplies using District purchase order system.
    • Performs work and cross trains in at least one other trade as an apprentice.
    • Assists with snow removal efforts on a 24 hour on-call basis.
    • Responds to emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
What You’ll Need
  • High school diploma or equivalent minimum required.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Colorado Driver's License and meet District insurability standards. Must have the ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Must hold/obtain and maintain a certification as a Certified Playground inspector from the National Playground Safety Association (NPSA). Certification in several types of industrial welding to include oxy-acetylene and AC/DC arc welding, preferred.
