About This Job

Perform as a senior level technician in auditing, verification, and processing of district-wide payroll, and monitoring compliance with district policy and related laws governing payroll.

What You'll Do

  • Audit, verify and input payroll data received from schools; ensuring proper backup and authorization for payroll transactions and proper payment for all work years.
  • Review, document and report personnel changes (i.e. new hires, terminations, change of assignments) and make adjustments to employee’s pay as required, requested and in compliance with district policy and related laws.
  • Document and report discrepancies, negligence, theft, fraud and falsification of records to a member of management independent of the perceived malefaction.
  • Review, update and process employee information, and payroll related information (adjustments, wages, deductions) and other information to detect and reconcile payroll discrepancies, and obtain proper authorization.
  • Receive notification of employee deaths, calculate tax liability, and process necessary payroll transactions.
  • Collect and organize payroll information, reviewing and correcting discrepancies, and preparing related required paperwork.
  • Ensure proper taxing for all employees, including retirees and students.
  • Research and communicate payroll information to employees, schools, and departments, by phone and in person, as authorized.
  • Complete employee verification forms.
  • Comply with all security protocols, and secure necessary approvals prior to the release or distribution of any information.
  • Provide technical direction and guidance to subordinate payroll level technicians.
  • Update and maintain knowledge of technical, legislative, and professional trends and developments, which impact payroll operations, including payroll systems. implementation and transition.
  • Process garnishments, tax levies, child support orders, manual checks and voids.
  • Perform other duties as requested.

What You’ll Need

  • High school Diploma or equivalent required, with an Associate’s Degree in Accounting or equivalent preferred.
  • Three (3) or more years of progressively responsible experience, in payroll administration and processing, preferably within a large school district or public sector employer.
  • Computer skills/experience and proficiency with various proprietary payroll and HRIS systems, preferably LAWSON.
  • Technical knowledge and experience with a variety of computer applications (spreadsheets, word-processing, graphics, and automated on-line accounting systems).
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) designation is desired but not required.

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles as promulgated by the Governmental Accounting Standard Board, preferably within a large school district or public sector employer, is desired.
  • Advanced knowledge of basic payroll laws, garnishment requirements, laws governing deceased payments, pre-tax vs. post-tax deductions and laws governing those deductions, and the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) preferred.
  • Ability to work under pressure, exercise good judgment and make sound decisions in stressful situations, preferred.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment, preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively with staff and the public, preferred.
  • Ability to receive, coordinate and assign various job related tasks simultaneously, preferred.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in both written and oral formats, preferred.
  • Ability to demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving skills, preferred.
