Job Summary
Under guidance, direction, and general supervision, the Laboratory Technician sets-up equipment for testing, operates test equipment, conducts routine and specialized tests, disassembles and assembles test samples, records technical data, drafts reports, and maintains good housekeeping.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
- Work with other Lab Technicians or Certifiers to complete assigned projects within negotiated time and cost schedules.
- Set‑up and operate all test equipment and perform tests within specific product areas.
- Determine compliance with requirements and recommend granting of certification.
- Perform specialized testing when required, following work orders.
- Conduct routine tests independently and assist in complex or unusual tests under senior staff guidance.
- Record technical data and draft test result reports; perform necessary mathematical calculations.
- Relate test results to product specifications.
- Act as a liaison with other departments as required by management.
- Assemble and disassemble test samples; hook‑up laboratory test equipment.
- Maintain good housekeeping of tools, equipment, and work area; carry out laboratory clean‑up duties.
- Ensure quality and consistency of lab equipment; follow up on non‑conformances and routine calibrations.
- Maintain integrity of customer samples in the lab per Quality Documents.
- Perform other laboratory duties as assigned by Manager or Project Manager.
Preferred Education & Experience
- Technical Certificate or equivalent education and experience.
- Associate’s degree in engineering technology or 2–4 years of related experience in wire and cable testing.
- Experience testing wire and cable products per CSA C22.2 No.2556 / UL2556, CSA C22.2 No.0.3, NFPA262, and related standards.
- Knowledge of wire and cable standards, electrical codes, electric and electronic circuits, and troubleshooting electronic equipment.
- Practical knowledge of working with test and measurement instruments and equipment (transducers, RTDs, thermocouples, anemometers, oscilloscope, power supplies, multi‑meters, power analyzers, chart recorders).
- Experience operating machines such as drills, table saws, band saws, bending machines, flame testing, tensile testing, and chemical tests for wire and cable standards.
- Ability to work independently and unsupervised, and to manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting delivery dates.
- Strong organizational, time‑management, and project‑management skills.
- Technical report writing and computer proficiency in Microsoft Office and LabVIEW.
Qualifications
- Can read, interpret, and develop engineering drawings and test data.
- Knowledge of laboratory instrumentation, operating principles, calibration procedures, and general laboratory procedures.
- Self‑motivated, client‑service oriented, and team‑oriented with good interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated systematic problem‑solving ability and ability to plan, organize, prioritize, follow‑through, and evaluate assigned functions and duties.
- Can work with minimal supervision for non‑complex projects.
