Technician II – Structured Cabling
Location: Reno, NV · Sign‑On Bonus: $2,500 (paid in three installments over the first year of employment at the 3‑month, 6‑month, and 12‑month milestones). Minimum hourly wage: $25.00, maximum hourly wage: $31.00.
Job Summary
The Communications Technician II performs advanced cable installation work and serves as a lead on technical teams. This role coordinates small groups of installers, ensures adherence to company safety and quality standards, and takes ownership of crew performance and project timelines.
Responsibilities
- Install work area outlets for floor, modular furniture, and wall applications; terminate CAT 3 and CAT 5 jacks; mount faceplates and surface‑mount boxes; adhere to IES labeling standards.
- Build and outfit closets including backboards, cross‑connects, racks, patch panels, fiber‑optic hardware, and equipment grounding; complete all IDC connections, including 110/66 blocks and patch panels.
- Perform testing, including continuity testing of horizontal and riser cable, volt‑ohmmeter use, tone‑set operation, and troubleshooting of opens, crosses, shorts, and transposed pairs.
- Identify active voice and data circuits.
- Lead crew performance, provide on‑the‑job training, and coordinate personnel and timelines to meet project milestones.
- Complete all IES paperwork accurately and on time, including timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, and tool transfers.
- Adhere to and actively participate in all company, customer, and industry safety and quality standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Tools
- Screwdriver (flat‑head and Phillips), drywall saw, torpedo level, tape measure, snips with belt sheath, needle‑nose and channel‑lock pliers, hammer, cable stripper, flashlight, and gloves.
- Punch tool with 110 and 66 block blades, tone set, 6/8‑position combo crimp tool, and Krone/3M/BIX tool.
Qualifications
- Work environment: must be able to work in indoor and outdoor construction environments, travel within branch or regional territory as needed, and work at heights, on ladders, and in confined spaces.
- Physical requirements: must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, move up to 75 pounds, distinguish colors, read small print, and recognize audible signals such as dial tones.
- Self‑motivated, professional, and positive approach.
- Strong problem‑solving and critical‑thinking skills with the ability to read, write, and present effectively.
- Proven ability to interpret blueprints, specifications, and project documents, including quality and reporting requirements.
- Ability to serve as the company liaison and interface directly with customer representatives.
- Promotes company culture and mission to employees, vendors, clients, and business partners.
- Supports process improvement initiatives.
- Education and experience: high school diploma or GED required; minimum two years of experience in telecommunications or a related technical field; demonstrated ability to supervise others; proficiency with all required tools; knowledge of universal communications color codes required.
- Must meet company minimum driving standards.
