Job summary

The City of Harrisonburg’s Parks & Recreation Department seeks a Technician I in Park Facility Maintenance to keep parks, facilities, and spaces safe, attractive, and well-operating. You will handle general repairs, operate tools and equipment, and support snow removal with a strong emphasis on safety and customer service.

Minimum requirements include a high school diploma or GED, 1–3 years in building trades, and a valid driver's license with CDL Class B within six months.

• High school diploma or GED required plus 1–3 years in building trades, maintenance, repair, or construction; equivalent combination considered.
• Valid driver's license; Virginia CDL Class B required within 6 months of hire; paid training provided for CDL attainment.

Responsibilities

• Perform general building maintenance and repairs (carpentry, painting, roofing, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, masonry, welding, appliance maintenance).
• Repair doors, windows, floors, walls, roofs, lighting, plumbing fixtures, furnishings; install cabinetry, shelving, tile, ceilings, sidewalks, fixtures.
• Operate and maintain tools, vehicles, and equipment; perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs; support snow and ice removal; assist other trades as needed.

The Technician I - Park Facility Maintenance is a full-time position with benefits and a preferred hiring range of $20.45 - $22.50 per hour (equivalent to $42,536 - $46,800 annually).

Applicants who do not meet the qualifications for the Technician I level may be considered for another level within the department at an annual rate commensurate with applicant qualifications.

Preferred Hiring Ranges:

• Journeyman: $19.54 - $21.00 per hour (equivalent to $40,643 - $43,680 annually)


• Technician I: $20.45 - $22.50 per hour (equivalent to $42,536 - $46,800 annually)

In this Technician I position in Park Facility Maintenance, you'll perform general building maintenance and repairs, including carpentry, painting, roofing, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, masonry, welding, and appliance maintenance. Key responsibilities include repairing doors, windows, floors, walls, roofs, lighting, plumbing fixtures, furnishings, and other building components; installing items such as cabinetry, shelving, tile, ceilings, sidewalks, and fixtures; and helping ensure facilities remain safe, functional, and welcoming for employees and the public. The successful candidate will also operate and maintain tools, vehicles, and equipment; complete basic preventive maintenance and minor repairs; perform vehicle and equipment inspections; support snow and ice removal operations; assist other skilled trades as needed; and respond professionally to assigned work orders while accurately documenting completed work.

Minimum Requirements for the Technician I Level:

• High school diploma or GED and moderate (1-3 years) experience in one of the building trades, maintenance, repair, and/or construction work. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be used to meet this requirement.


• Valid driver's license. Virginia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B required within six (6) months of hire. Paid, on-the-job training will be provided for CDL attainment.
