Job description

This position is assigned to Irrigation, as described in the job description below.

The budgeted entry pay rate for this position is $19.94-$21.93 per hour.

JOB SUMMARY

Under general direction the Maintenance Technician I operates equipment and drives vehicles. Performs routine manual labor activities such as repairing or replacing needed structures. Also operates lawn mowers, front-deck mowers, tractors, weed eaters, edgers, chainsaws, and other landscaping and maintenance equipment.

When assigned to General Maintenance,

this position also performs light maintenance and construction work such as painting, electrical work, repairs, concrete work and general carpentry.

When assigned to Irrigation,

this position also maintains and repairs sprinkler and irrigation systems for assigned City grounds and facilities. This includes conducting regular system inspections to ensure proper water coverage, preventing water waste, performing preventive maintenance, installing and troubleshooting irrigation components/controllers, and coordinating schedules to support grounds care.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
If Assigned to General Maintenance:
  1. Handles general maintenance for City buildings, including, but not limited to, painting, plumbing, electrical work and general maintenance to the buildings.
  2. Works in the construction of new buildings performing general carpentry, plumbing and electrical.
  3. Reads and follows blueprints in construction and repair of buildings.
  4. Operates backhoe and drives trucks performing construction and maintenance activities.
If Assigned to Irrigation:
  1. Inspects sprinkler and irrigation systems regularly for wet or dry spots, broken heads, leaking lines, and improper water pressure.
  2. Locates and repairs electrical faults, wire breaks, malfunctioning valves, and controller issues.
  3. Installs, programs, and updates controllers/timers, including modern, water-efficient technology like smart Wi-Fi controllers and rain sensors.
  4. Digs trenches, lays PVC or poly pipe, cuts and glues PVC, installs backflow preventers, and wires controllers.
  5. Activates, tests, and performs preventive maintenance on new, temporary, and existing irrigation systems.
  6. Maintains accurate records of parts used, system tracking maps, programming settings, and hours worked.
  7. Works closely with supervisors and maintenance staff to ensure proper watering schedules that support the effective application of turf treatments, fertilizers, and grounds maintenance.

If Assigned to Irrigation:
  1. Knowledge of irrigation and grounds maintenance equipment.
  2. Understanding of turf and grounds maintenance principles.
  3. Basic math skills for irrigation calculations.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

If Assigned to General Maintenance:
  1. One year of grounds and/or facility maintenance experience.
If Assigned to Irrigation:
  1. Minimum of one (1) year irrigation experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
If Assigned to General Maintenance:
  1. Two years experience in general maintenance.
  2. Technical school courses in carpentry, electrical and plumbing.
If Assigned to Irrigation:
  1. Certified Irrigation Technician (CIT) or Certified Irrigation Auditor (CLIA) via the Irrigation Association.
  2. Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certification.
