Job summary

Gordon Food Service is seeking a Level 1 Technician (Apprentice) for our distribution centers to perform preventive maintenance on building and system equipment, diagnose issues, and support repairs. You will work under close supervision in a fast-paced environment.

The role emphasizes safety, basic mechanical/electrical skills, and the ability to use hand tools while maintaining a clean shop and following established procedures to ensure reliable operations across our facilities.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Perform preventative maintenance on building equipment and systems to ensure safe operation.

• Keep a neat maintenance shop and inventory of materials.

Position Summary

Manual Distribution Centers

• Maintains Powered Industrial Vehicles (PIV), fire protection systems, dock equipment, including levelers and restraints, lighting inside and outside, dock doors, industrial batteries and chargers, racking and other duties as assigned.
• Performs maintenance and repairs on the building and building systems. This includes preventative maintenance and repairs, along with responding to calls and performing system enhancements.

Mechanized Distribution Centers

• Maintains Powered Industrial Vehicles (PIV), fire protection systems, dock equipment, including levelers and restraints, lighting inside and outside, dock doors, industrial batteries and chargers, racking and other duties as assigned.
• Performs maintenance and repairs on material handling systems. This includes preventative maintenance along with responding to calls and performing system enhancements.

Essential Functions

• Performs preventative maintenance on building equipment and systems to ensure safe and efficient operation.
• Observes mechanical devices in operation, perform diagnostic routines and troubleshoots to locate root cause of problems and makes appropriate adjustments and repairs.
• Performs electrical diagnostics on equipment and makes necessary repairs based on the diagnosis.
• Dismantles devices to gain access to and remove defective parts using hoists, hand and power tools.
• Maintains a maintenance shop, storage closets and tool rooms in a neat and orderly fashion.
• Follows through and completes all work orders in assigned time period
• Maintains appropriate levels of material handling equipment inventory.
• Tracks and completes all preventative maintenance utilizing Maximo CMMS (computerized maintenance management system)
• Ensures compliance with OSHA and other federal, state, and local guidelines.
• Adheres to the mission and cornerstone values and applicable practices of the organization.
• Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate books, journals and other literature and attending related conferences, seminars, etc. Maintains peer relationships in the field to share issues and ideas.
• Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities: Level 1 Technician (Apprentice)

Supervision Level

• Daily 1-1 with leadership on the floor
• Very intensive leadership oversight
• 100% of work must be inspected and employee feedback provided

Mentorship

• Must be assigned a peer mentor from Level 2 or higher
• This person is not allowed to act as a peer trainer in any capacity

E-learning Requirements

• Honeywell Level 1 completion (within 12 months for external hires to this role)

Work Habits

• Must have a high level of initiative
• Must work safe on a consistent basis

Knowledge

• Basic mechanical skills
  • Component identification
  • Proper, and safe, use of hand tools
  • Ability to perform basic PM’s after being shown once
• Basic electrical skills
  • Component identification
  • Ability to use meter to check continuity
  • Ability to wire 480V 3PH motor using simple wiring diagram
• Job Performance:
  • Assigned Maintenance Percentage - Less than 12.5% per month
  • Work Order Failures - No more than 4 per month

Work Assignments

• PM’s and work assignments all with trainer support and oversight
• No critical equipment assignments are allowed
• All work assignments, including PM’s, are all inspected by a Level 3 Technician or a member of maintenance leadership before returning to service
