With a comprehensive portfolio and deep technical expertise, we help customers meet the demands of the global market. Join us and help shape the future of aerospace and defense.

The Global Technical Services organization at Collins Aerospace is seeking a Detail Drafter to join our Mechanical Computer-Aided Design team. We are looking for a team player with strong initiative and the ability to thrive in an environment of rapidly shifting priorities.

In this role, the Detail Drafter will prepare and revise a wide range of engineering drawings and maintain associated parts lists. The ideal candidate is proficient in creating engineering documentation that accurately depicts mechanical product details, assemblies, and overall layouts. Responsibilities include part model creation, view development, and applying correct nomenclature, utilizing geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).

Detail Drafters play a critical role in precisely documenting components to support the manufacturing and assembly of high‑precision products. Success in this position requires understanding part and assembly function, identifying functional datums, and recognizing how each component interacts within the larger assembly. Drafters must create all necessary views to fully dimension parts and assemblies using ANSI standards and GD&T methodologies to ensure accurate tolerancing and build‑up analysis.

The selected candidate will follow the standard Collins modeling and detailing practices to ensure that designs can be consistently reviewed, analyzed, and released in accordance with established practices.

This position is onsite at our facility in Rockford, Illinois.

What You Will Do
  • Develop fully dimensioned detail drawings that comply with industry standards, Collins requirements, and manufacturing best practices.
  • Ensure all drawings are accurate, complete, and appropriately dimensioned to meet program needs and support tolerance stack-up analyses.
  • Update and maintain detail drawings throughout review cycles based on engineering feedback.
  • Incorporate drawing revisions in accordance with engineering change requests.
  • Apply Collins Standard Work, including Design Standard Features and the Design Guide Book, to complete tasks consistently and efficiently.
  • Collaborate with Collins Product Definition and engineering support teams, coordinating assistance as needed.
  • Use CAD/software tools following recommended methods to ensure consistency, simplify future revisions, and reduce model or drawing complexity.

Detail Drafters are expected to collaborate directly with Collins engineering staff in the design and development of products and test equipment. They may also be required to coordinate and communicate with engineering, design, or drafting teams from other Collins divisions worldwide. Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a global workforce are essential.

Candidates must be able to perform well in a team environment and accurately interpret and implement both oral and written instructions. Strict adherence to established design processes is critical to ensuring successful product realization for our customers. Attention to detail is paramount to delivering safe, reliable products into service.
