Job summary

Collins Aerospace in Rockford, IL is seeking a Drafting Designer to join the MCAD team. You will develop 2D concepts, create 3D models and assemblies in NX, and lead drafting efforts for complex parts. The role emphasizes GD&T accuracy and Model‑Based Definition to enable downstream manufacturing.

You will collaborate with engineering and the Structures group to provide precise product definitions, support tolerancing analysis, and maintain data quality and compliance across projects.

Qualifications

• Typically requires a STEM degree and minimum 5 years of relevant experience or an advanced degree with at least 3 years of experience.
• Proven experience in 3D mechanical design and drafting for complex assemblies.
• Strong understanding of GD&T and ANSI Y14.5M standards, PLM tools, and general computer applications.

Responsibilities

• Work with engineering for initial 2D concept of product.

The Global Technical Services organization at Collins Aerospace is seeking a Drafting Designer to join our Mechanical Computer-Aided Design (MCAD) team.

We are looking for a team player with strong initiative and the ability to thrive in an environment of rapidly shifting priorities designing complex aerospace products.

What You Will Do

• Work with engineering for initial 2D concept of product
• Create 3D product models, outlines, and layout
• Create solid model piece parts and housings in NX, support the move towards Model-Based Definition, direct to manufacture
• Apply tolerance stack-up analysis results to ensure correct fit and alignment, and performance of complex assemblies
• Create assemblies in NX and manage the Bill of Materials
• Create dimensioned detail component drawings for high complexity piece parts
• Lead detailing drafters in the completion of component drawings for a design project
• Check drawings for accuracy, correct GD&T, and compliance to company / industry standards
• Support interface with the Structures group to ensure that they have the necessary physical product definition to perform stress, thermal and dynamic analyses as required and as directed by engineering.
• Ensure proper filing, control, and export classification of created design data

Qualifications You Must Have

• Ability to obtain U.S. Secret government issued security clearance
• Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years of experience
• Proven experience in 3D mechanical design and drafting, including the development of complex assemblies.
• Strong understanding of GD&T and ANSI Y14.5M standards, along with working proficiency in drafting practices, PLM tools, and general computer applications.

Qualifications We Prefer

• Strong knowledge of mechanical and manufacturing principles, with demonstrated ability to read and interpret models, assembly drawings, and detailed part prints.
• Proficiency with Siemens NX and Teamcenter, particularly in design of rotating machines.
• Experience with additional CAD platforms is also beneficial.
• Manufacturing background and experience are highly valued.
• As our Collins team expands its use of Model‑Based Definition (MBD) and Additive Manufacturing, familiarity with these technologies is highly desirable.

The salary range for this role is 86,800 USD - 165,200 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels.
