Job Details
MERC, a research institute of Mercer University, provides high‑quality engineering, scientific, and technical support services to both government and private industry customers. The Technician provides support to engineers in electrical, electronic, mechanical, or machining assembly, disassembly, repair, and maintenance under the supervision of the respective chief engineer.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate mills, lathes, drill presses, and other manual equipment.
- Set up, adjust, and operate CNC machines for close tolerance turning, milling, and deburring.
- Proof, edit, and manually program CNC machining instructions.
- Fabricate mechanical parts or tools from engineering drawings.
- Measure and cut materials to precise specifications.
- Check finished work to ensure it meets tolerance requirements.
- Read and interpret technical data packages and engineering drawings.
- Review blueprints and plan machining/assembly sequences.
- Lay out, align, and secure parts and assemblies to meet technical requirements.
- Perform diagnostic tests on mechanical components with engineering support.
- Conduct mechanical assessments and provide recommendations to engineers.
- Assemble, disassemble, repair, and maintain mechanical systems or subsystems.
- Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools.
- Maintain equipment in safe operating condition.
- Follow relevant safety standards and use required protective equipment.
- Maintain a clean, organized work area.
- Perform tasks with attention to detail and minimal difficulty.
- Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- U.S. Citizenship.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance.
- High school diploma or GED, plus relevant technical certifications.
- Ability to work in a standing position for extended periods.
- Complies with all quality and safety standards.
- Completes work on time and within budget.
- Able to multitask and manage multiple requirements as needed.
- Verify finished workpieces meet specifications using precision measuring instruments.
- Maintain required tolerances and finishes according to engineering and manufacturing standards.
- Calculate dimensions and tolerances using mathematics and precision measurement tools (micrometers, calipers, dial indicators).
- Select, align, and secure fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines.
- Knowledge of cutting tools and inserts for turning, drilling, boring, threading, and milling.
- Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, and specifications.
- Determine dimensions, tolerances, sequences of operations, and setup requirements.
- Set machine controls for speed, feed, coolant flow, tool paths, depth, and angle of cut.
- Enter, retrieve, or edit computerized machining control data.
- Start and monitor machine operations, identifying malfunctions or out‑of‑tolerance conditions and adjusting controls as needed.
- Troubleshoot machining issues and work with engineering to develop fabrication options and plans.
Desired Qualifications
- Ability to obtain university approved driver card.
- Experience in application of anodizing, primer, paint, etc.
- Certified forklift operator is preferred.
