Job description

JOB DESCRIPTION

The technician will support the Communications and Control Engineering Group primarily as a field resource responsible for checking settings, communications, and controllers or distribution devices. This includes work related to battery storage systems, program verification, troubleshooting, and database maintenance for this equipment. The role involves coordination with engineers and technical services staff to ensure device functionality and communication integrity.

Typical Day

The technician begins their day at a service center (MDC) and receives direction from the Engineering Group. They will travel to assigned field locations to perform communication equipment installations, verify programming, update communications, troubleshoot, and support engineers remotely. The role is 100% on‑site and field‑based, traveling throughout Colorado.

Work Environment & Culture

Highly collaborative, requiring constant communication with engineering and technical staff. The technician must be a team player and comfortable working independently in the field while taking direction from multiple groups.

Safety Considerations

This is a field‑based position. Safety risks are mainly related to driving and traffic. The technician will be required to wear PPE such as a vest and occasionally use a ladder for higher installations. The position may require personal vehicle use.

Work Hours

Full‑time, 40 hours per week with potential for occasional overtime. Overtime is considered an exception, not standard.

Location

Full‑time, 100% onsite/field‑based; primary base at MDC service centers in Colorado.

Responsibilities

• Field‑based technician checking settings, communications, and controllers or distribution devices.

• Battery storage systems, program verification, troubleshooting, and database maintenance.

• Coordination with engineers and technical services staff to ensure device functionality and communication integrity.

• Supports and assists in the design, development, production, testing, operation, and maintenance of components and equipment.

• Prepares detailed drawings and layouts, conducts materials testing, performs equipment maintenance, calibration, mechanical and electrical repairs, adjustments, and monitoring of products under development.

• Tests models, writes reports, and identifies problems.

Skills & Qualifications
  • Electrical or communications troubleshooting experience.
  • Networking knowledge (firewalls, connectivity, Ethernet).
  • Microsoft Office (Excel, Access proficiency preferred).
  • Database updating and maintenance.
  • Basic understanding of electrical engineering or distribution systems.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Team‑oriented approach.
  • Analytical and troubleshooting mindset.
  • Ability to work independently in field conditions.
  • Approximately 2 years of relevant experience in communications, IT, or electrical troubleshooting (backgrounds in telecommunications, network support, or electric panel wiring acceptable).
  • Experience from telecom companies such as Comcast or similar is beneficial.
  • Preferred: Electrical distribution experience.
  • Recloser or cap bank familiarity.
  • Network configuration experience.
  • Prior utilities or telecom installation experience.
