Job summary

Smiths Detection in the United States is seeking a Technical Trainer (Cargo, Bilingual) to deliver operator and technical trainings to internal staff, service partners, and customers in Ports and Borders. The primary responsibility for Technical Trainer (Cargo, Bilingual) will be to deliver operator and technical trainings to internal staff, service partners, and customers in the Ports and Borders and market. Review training material using Instructional Systems Design (ISD) methodologies to drive continuous improvement. This individual will also consult with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), Program Management, and other key stakeholders to ensure training material has the most current content to exceed customer needs. The individual would be expected to fulfill these duties while adhering to Smiths Detection’s best practices in Health, Safety, Environment (HSE), security, U.S. export control and SSA government guidelines.

Job duties to include but are not limited to;
  • Deliver operator and technical training at customer sites. After completion of internal training certification process, travel may reach 90% at peak times. Delivery features PowerPoint presentations, soft copy job aids, hands-on activities, and end of course assessments.
  • Monitor survey questions from audiences to update processes and materials.
  • Deliver training to virtual audience using presentations and breakout rooms, when travel restrictions to sites are in place.
  • Explain and demonstrate best practices regarding safety. This includes adhering to administrative controls, proper interaction with engineering controls, and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Review and prepare for local safety protocols to visiting sites. This may include high areas of commercial and POV traffic.
  • Explain and demonstrate tasks of a wide range of complexity to students of varying knowledge and ability. Examples include training an operator to turn on a piece of equipment, scaling up to training a technician to reprogram a computer or replace a high voltage X-Ray emission source.
  • Perform Training Needs Analysis (TNA) to ensure proper alignment of customer needs against training curriculum.
  • Collaborate with Instructional Designers to create new training material, and to revise existing material, with input from SMEs, Field Service, and Voice of Customer within the business.
  • Participate in program reviews, technical interchange meetings and design reviews; explain application of ISD to complex technical concepts to a broad audience.
  • Other duties as required by the business.
Required/Preferred:
  • The candidate must have high degree of mechanical, electrical, and/or electronic understanding. A college degree is acceptable but not required.
  • An active certification from an accredited training certification institute, such as ATD, ACCET, or Langevin is preferred.
  • Must be able to speak fluent in Spanish
Years of Experience:
  • 3-5 years of training experience, ideally within industry and/or government (military / first responders / automation / aerospace / healthcare / government contractor / etc.)
Education Level:
  • High school diploma minimum
Additional Qualifications:
  • Must be able to obtain and retain U.S. government security clearance.
Technical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication towards a multitude of groups/people.
  • Strong sense of ownership, in safety best practices, assigned tasks and building of relationships.
  • Ability to serve as safety ambassador to both internal and external customers.
  • Strong ability to interpret equipment circuit diagrams, technical manuals, and field service bulletins.
  • Manual handling of hand tools, power tools, test equipment, and components.
  • Ability to lift items weighing up to 50 lbs. unassisted.
  • Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb, balance or stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Demonstrate proper physical techniques of repairs, etc.
  • Ability to complete fall protection training, or have an active certificate of completion
  • Comfortable with Microsoft 365 suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, MS Teams).
  • Verbal and written fluency in Spanish is required. French or Portuguese is beneficial.

The total compensation for this position ranges from $86,944 - $130,416/yr (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, & abilities of the applicant and the alignment with the internal team & market data).
