Job Description: Technical Support Specialist I/II/III

Definition:

The Technical Support Specialist I/II/III performs a variety of technical duties in the analysis, design, testing, installation, and maintenance of information technology systems, including third-party applications in a networked environment. Responsibilities include installing, operating, and maintaining computer equipment, as well as providing training and technical assistance to inter-departmental staff.

Supervision Received and Exercised:

Receives general supervision from the Information Technology Operations Manager. No direct supervision of staff is exercised, but responsibilities may include the indirect supervision of lower-level and/or part-time staff.

Class Characteristics:

The Technical Support Specialist I/II/III is distinguished from the Information Technology Specialist I/II series by less complex and independent assignments. Upon satisfactory completion of one year of training and meeting minimum requirements, the Specialist I may be promoted to Specialist II. The Specialist II is the journey level and may advance to Specialist III after two years of full duties, demonstrated abilities, and meeting qualifications.

Examples of Essential Functions:

Management reserves the right to modify work assignments and make accommodations. Duties include:

  • Designing, developing, testing, and implementing computer applications.
  • Maintaining documentation and inventory for software applications.
  • Analyzing problems with existing applications.
  • Consulting with city department staff.
  • Analyzing current processes and procedures.
  • Determining equipment and software needs.
  • Maintaining city phone systems and conducting staff training on hardware and software.
  • Participating in the design, implementation, and maintenance of data communications, LANs, and WANs.
  • Limited programming of third-party applications using built-in tools.
  • Assisting with network server administration and related software.
Education and Experience:

Any combination of training and experience providing the required knowledge and skills. Typically:

  • High school diploma or equivalent plus college coursework in data processing, computer science, or related fields.
  • Experience:
    • Specialist I: 1 year of relevant IT experience.
    • Specialist II: 2 years of related professional experience.
    • Specialist III: 4 years of related professional experience.

Substitutions include an Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in a related field for one year of experience.

Licenses and Certificates:

Valid California driver’s license if duties require driving.

Physical Demands:

Work in an office environment, use standard equipment, attend meetings, and occasionally lift items up to 50 pounds.

Environmental Elements:

Work in an office with moderate noise, controlled temperature, and possibly confined spaces. Interact with staff and public, sometimes in stressful situations.
