Job summary

The Lubrizol Corporation in Brecksville, OH seeks a highly dedicated Technical Specialist for our R&D team. You will work with scientists and engineers to address technical challenges in the processing of thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) and ensure safe operation of labs and equipment.

Responsibilities include operating molding equipment, maintaining 5S standards, writing SOPs, capturing data in ELN, and collaborating to scale processing.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in engineering, life sciences, chemistry, or related technical field.
  • Commitment to safety and quality practices.
  • Prior experience in an R&D laboratory setting.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols and lab best practices.
  • Maintain labs using 5S Methodology and organize equipment and samples.
  • Operate lab processing equipment (injection molder, compression molder, extruders) safely and efficiently.
  • Write and review SOPs and perform preventative maintenance on processing equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve equipment and process issues to maintain smooth lab operations.
  • Plan and execute experiments, interpret data with internal experts, and summarize results.
  • Capture data accurately using ELN and other collaboration tools; maintain detailed records.
  • Analyze processing data with staff to support research goals; solve TPU processing challenges.
  • Assist with scale-up of processing equipment, internally or at customers.

How You’ll Make An Impact

We are seeking a highly dedicated and detail-oriented Technical Specialist to become an integral part of our dynamic R&D team. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to work collaboratively with our scientists and engineers to address and resolve a diverse range of technical challenges. The successful candidate will exemplify a strong commitment to the safe and efficient operation of our laboratories, which encompass both thermal processing equipment and sensitive analytical instruments.


In this position you will:


  • Ensure adherence to all safety protocols and laboratory best practices.
  • Maintain labs using the 5S Methodology: maintain equipment and lab space by performing tasks such as sweeping, mopping, wiping down equipment, organizing tools, and inventorying samples.
  • Operate our lab’s processing equipment (injection molder, compression molder, and extruders) safely and efficiently.
  • Maintain processing equipment. Write and review standard operating procedures, schedule and perform preventative maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve equipment and process issues to maintain smooth lab operations.
  • Perform broadly defined experiments: plan the experiment, execute the work, interpret the data in collaboration with internal experts, summarize results.
  • Capture experimental data accurately and maintain detailed records using electronic lab notebook (ELN) and other collaboration software.
  • Analyze and interpret processing data in collaboration with fellow staff members to support research goals.
  • Solve complex technical challenges related to the processing of thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) through close collaboration with scientists and engineers.
  • Assist with the scale up of processing equipment, internally or at customers.

Required Qualifications That Enable Your Success

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Life Sciences, Computer Science, Quality, or a Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a technical field such as engineering, chemistry, or a related discipline.
  • Commitment to safety and quality practices.
  • Prior experience in an R&D laboratory setting.
  • At least five years of experience of thermal processing of thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) using, for example, injection molding, compression molding, film and tubing extrusion, and twin-screw compounding.
  • Familiarity with running analytical tests on polymers, for example mechanical testing and optical microscopy.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, collaboration abilities, and ability to write technical reports.
  • Proficient in using collaboration software including SharePoint and OneNote.
  • Proficient with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Preferred Qualifications That Drive You Forward

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in polymer processing or engineering.
  • At least five years of experience of thermal processing of thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs).
  • Proficiency in utilizing electronic lab notebooks (ELNs) to document processing results, track experimental samples and material inventory, and record experimental data.
  • Experience maintaining a lab to 5S standards.
  • Familiarity with ISO and ASTM standards.
