Job summary

The Lubrizol Corporation is seeking a Technical Service Engineer for Medical Polymers in Brecksville, OH, with relocation to Wickliffe, OH. You will apply polymer science to help customers integrate TPU materials into medical devices, working with manufacturing and sales teams on product changes and customer support.

You’ll develop deep knowledge of TPU properties, processing, testing, and regulatory considerations while traveling up to 25% to visit customers and sites.

Qualifications

  • BS in a technical field (engineering, chemistry, biochemistry or related)
  • 3+ years of experience with running process or analytical test equipment
  • Prior experience in an R&D laboratory setting
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication, collaboration abilities, and ability to write technical reports
  • Familiarity with thermal processing of polymers
  • Strong aptitude and enthusiasm for learning new digital tools (AI, ELNs, Teams, SharePoint) to enhance productivity, accuracy, and collaboration
  • Proficient with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook

Responsibilities

  • Define technical evaluation strategies for changes to existing products and processes at our manufacturing locations.
  • Coordinate test sample creation and test entry.
  • Review data and determine acceptability of results and potential impact on product properties and performance and advise product management and commercial team regarding changes to products.
  • Work with procurement to define technical requirements when new raw materials/suppliers are under consideration.
  • Work with product management and sales to structure change communication with customers for existing products.
  • Create customer-facing data documents and address customers’ technical questions regarding notified product changes.
  • Develop and utilize broad understanding of TPUs, their processing methods, and their applications in medical devices to protect current business and establish new business.
  • Provide support for sales activities such as data/sample requests, customer trials, and technical meetings.
  • Communicate effectively with customers with a focus on understanding key customer needs and technical challenges.
  • Troubleshoot and solve complex problems using internal resources.
  • Travel up to 25% domestically to visit customers and manufacturing sites.
  • Collaborate with global sales and technical teams to address regional needs.
  • Maintain relationships with Asia technical service team to align regional and global strategy.
  • Manage portfolio of customer projects and mentor junior associates.
  • Serve as technical representative during quality complaint handling and drive quality initiatives.

How You’ll Make an Impact

The Technical Service Engineer applies core polymer science and engineering principles to help our customers successfully use our thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) in their medical devices. In this role, you will develop deep expertise in our TPU product portfolio including how they are manufactured, their unique properties and performance characteristics, how they are processed, tested, and regulated, and how they enable safe and effective medical device designs.

You will work both with our manufacturing plants and our customers. The position requires the capacity to learn and adopt advanced digital tools, such as AI‑enabled analytics, structured data‑capture platforms, and enterprise collaboration systems, to enhance process reliability and operational performance.

Operations Support:

  • Define technical evaluation strategies for changes to existing products and processes at our manufacturing locations.
  • Coordinate test sample creation and test entry.
  • Review data and determine acceptability of results and potential impact on resulting product properties and performance and advise product management and commercial team regarding technical approval of changes to products.
  • Work with procurement to define technical requirements when new raw materials/suppliers are under consideration.
  • Work with product management and sales to structure change communication with customers for existing products.
  • Create customer-facing data documents and addresses customers’ technical questions regarding notified product changes.

Applications Support:

  • Develop and utilize your broad understanding of thermoplastic polyurethanes, their processing methods, and their applications in medical devices to protect current business and establish new business.
  • Provide support for sales activities such as data/sample requests, customer trials, and technical meetings.
  • Communicate effectively with customers with a focus on understanding key customer needs and technical challenges.
  • Troubleshoot and solve complex problems using a variety of resources including published literature, internal technical data, and internal experts.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% domestically to visit customers and manufacturing sites.
  • Work with members of the sales team on a global basis to address regional technical service needs.
  • Maintain close relationship with Asia technical service team to ensure alignment of their regional strategy with our global strategy.
  • Maintain portfolio of customer driven applications projects by working closely with technical and sales teams as well as our portfolio manager.
  • Serve as technical representative during quality complaint handling. Drive implementation of product quality improvement initiatives.
  • Serve as materials technical expert for internal customers, e.g. contract manufacturing.
  • Develop strategy to grow a sustainable technical solutions organization. Develop and mentor junior associates.

Preferred Qualifications that Drive you Forward

  • Specific experience with processing, properties, and/or performance of thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs), especially thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs).
  • Familiarity with regulatory aspects of biomaterials.
  • Experience maintaining a lab to 5S standards.
  • Experience with electronic lab notebooks (ELNs).
  • Familiarity with ISO and ASTM standards.
  • Demonstrated ability in applying AI tools to boost efficiency and the quality of deliverables
