Job summary

AkzoNobel is seeking a Technical Service Representative in Houston, TX. This role focuses on field-level coating applications, inspections, and technical support for vessel services.

You will generate records, advise customers on coating schemes, and ensure adherence to SSPC, NACE, and ISO standards while traveling up to 20%.

Qualifications

  • 3 years' sales experience in a technical environment.
  • Knowledge of coatings industry standards ( SSPC, NACE, ISO ) and ability to use inspection equipment.
  • Ability to travel up to 20% and work in a field role.

Responsibilities

  • Generate and maintain accurate records and application reports for products including environmental conditions and coating details.
  • Attend scheduled inspections and verify specification adherence through quality checks of surface prep and application steps.
  • Advise customers on products and schemes based on vessel service environments and performance expectations; demonstrate equipment use as needed.
  • Inform customers and supervisors when conditions do not meet specs to obtain resolutions; prepare exception reports when unresolved.
  • Monitor customer applications to ensure compliance with company specifications and coating procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Key Responsibilities


  • Generate and maintain accurate records and application reports of company products to include daily environmental conditions, surface preparation, and relevant coating application information.

  • Attend scheduled inspections. Will verify specification and standard adherence by performing quality checks of surface preparation and application steps in the painting process.

  • Advise customers of products and schemes based on vessel service environments and performance expectations. May occasionally be required to demonstrate proper use of application equipment (i.e. Single feed airless, Conventional and plural component).

  • Advise the customer and/or applicator and their immediate supervisor when conditions are identified that are not within company specifications or application guidelines to acquire resolutions. Will prepare exception report when conditions are not resolved.

  • Monitor customers/applicators in the proper application of coatings and paint systems in accordance with company specifications.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Job Requirements


  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor of Science in related field preferred.

  • 3 years' sales experience in a technical environment. Additional experience may be considered in lieu of educational requirement.

  • 1 year experience using coating applications, techniques, and practices.

  • Knowledge of the coatings industry standards (i.e. SSPC, NACE, ISO, etc.) with the ability to use inspection equipment for both surface preparation and coating application operations. Must be able to maintain safety and wear required personal protective equipment.

  • Knowledge of marine industry terminology and practices to include marine vessel maintenance and repair and new build.

  • Ability to apply principles of observation, logical, or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions based on the evidence. Must be able to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form with abstract and concrete variables.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to read industry-related publications.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office. Must be able to utilize technological tools and supporting software to accurately record data and generate technical reports.

  • Ability to travel up to 20%. Overnight travel may be required.


Physical Requirements


  • Ability to lift up to 100 pounds.

  • Ability to detect emergency and safety alarms and increase awareness in high risk areas.

  • Ability to swim or learn to swim, May have to work around a water environment.

  • Ability to ascend, descend, and/or balance on ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, and poles using feet and lefts and/or hands and arms. Body equilibrium must be maintained to prevent falling when walking or standing.

  • Ability to crouch or run on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces.

  • Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. May need to crawl into/out of confined spaces.

  • Ability to reach, handle, finger or feel to seize, hold, grasp, or turn items.

  • Ability to successfully complete a respiratory fit test (RFT).

  • Ability to perceive the nature of objects by the eye. This will include:

    • Acuity, Far – Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more.

    • Acuity, Near – Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less.

    • Depth Perception – Three-dimensional vision. Ability to judge distance and space relationships.

    • Field of Vision – Area that can be seen up and down or to right or left while eyes are fixed on a given point.

    • Accommodation – Adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. Especially important when completing near-point work at varying distances from eye.

    • Color Vision – Ability to identify and distinguish colors.

Rewards and Benefits

The salary range for these skills is $75,000.00 - $80,000.00 based upon experience. This is the range that we in good faith anticipate relying on when setting wages for this position. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This salary range may also be modified in the future.


This position is also eligible for a vehicle allowance, mileage reimbursement, and an annual bonus target of 15%, based on individual and company performance.
