Job summary

Mativ Holdings, Inc. is seeking a Technical Process Engineer at the Whiting Mill to support process improvement initiatives, emphasize safety and quality, and partner with production teams to strengthen current offerings while pursuing new customer opportunities.

You will lead trials, analyze data, document cause-and-effect relationships, and drive capital and non-capital projects using Lean methods, collaborating with maintenance, IT, and procurement.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, paper science or related field.
  • Must be able to work on rotating weekends (typically 5 weekends per year).
  • Must wear PPE when needed and travel through the facility to perform tasks in hot/humid areas.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical expertise to modify existing mill process and/or add new processes to improve quality and profitability.
  • Provide technical knowledge to improve process control and product quality or support new product development.
  • Complete cost optimization projects yielding savings through substitutions, reduced variability, better quality, and higher efficiency.
  • Carry out process improvement work including planning and supervising in-mill production trials; coordinate efforts for achievement.
  • Write technical reports documenting trials, results, and cause-and-effect relationships.
  • Assist production in evaluating operation of major equipment and in design of modifications.
  • Utilize process information systems to analyze production trends and troubleshoot improvements.
  • Support development and execution of capital projects; identify non-capital improvements for overall efficiency.
  • Apply Lean concepts when implementing and developing change.
  • Maintain communications with production, maintenance, IT, environmental, sales, purchasing, and product development teams.

Description

The Technical Process Engineer supports key initiatives, prioritizes process improvement needs and works with the team to secure new customers and expand offerings to existing customers. This on-site position will provide technical support to the manufacturing production crews, while emphasizing safety and quality.

Responsibilities
  • Keep environmental and employee safety top-of-mind in the completion of all tasks. Support mill-wide safety efforts to achieve a 0 OSHA recordable rate.
  • Provide technical expertise to modify existing mill process and/or add new processes that will improve quality and increase profitability.
  • Provide technical knowledge to improve process control, quality of existing products and/or new product development.
  • Complete cost optimization projects that provide significant savings through product substitution, reduced variability, improved quality, and higher operating efficiencies.
  • Carry out process improvement/optimization work including planning and supervising in-mill production trials. Determine areas requiring process improvements and coordinate efforts for achievement.
  • Write technical reports that clearly document trials, process improvement results, and capture cause and effect relationships.
  • Provide assistance to production in evaluating operation of major equipment and assist in design of modifications and changes required; aid operating personnel to better understand their processes.
  • Utilize process information systems to analyze production trends; assist in troubleshooting and identify possible improvements.
  • Support development and execution of capital projects.
  • Identify and develop non-capital process improvement projects to help the overall efficiency of the entire system in all aspects of production.
  • Use Lean concepts when implementing and developing change.
  • Maintain effective communications and working relationships with production supervision and operating personnel as well as product development, suppliers, asset development, maintenance, IT, environmental, sales and marketing, research, engineering, and purchasing.
  • Develop proficiency in the use of mill information systems including ABB and Oracle.
  • Perform other responsibilities related to position, as required.
Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, paper science or related field. Prior related experience in a process-oriented manufacturing environment and continuous improvement processes will be considered.
  • Must be able to work on rotating weekends (typically 5 weekends per year. Weekends may also include adjacent holidays.)
  • Must be able to wear required PPE when needed, and travel through the facility to perform tasks in areas that are hot and humid. This may require climbing stairs or ladders.
  • Must have the ability to design and evaluate equipment and processes in terms of chemistry, control strategies, mechanical integrity, energy transfer, thermodynamics, mass transfer, and fluid dynamics.
  • Understanding of activities and procedures required for efficient and quality work completion.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to communicate within all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to multi-task effectively in a fast-paced production setting.
Preferred
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of Process Engineer experience in paper mill, coating, saturating or converting operations.
  • Strong computer skills including, but not limited to a working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Project. Experience with Oracle is helpful.
  • Experience in a Lean Manufacturing environment is a distinct plus.
  • Experience with customer interactions; ideally collaborating with others to help define needs, identify solutions and resolve problems.
  • Familiarity with any of these programs is a plus: Oracle, PARCview, ABB, QiSoft, Concur, Velocity, SharePoint.
Competencies
  • Exercise strong problem solving, analytical and work prioritization skills.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Suite.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
