Job description

Assistant Technical Director - Full Time

Under the supervision of the technical director, this position is responsible for the construction, mounting, and rigging of the scenery.

Supervise any additional crew in the actual construction of set pieces.

Assist with load-ins, show maintenance, and set strikes.

Responsible for maintaining the scene-shop equipment and supplies.

Serve as the main scenery contact, receiving and implementing build drawings, organizing the space and supplies, and communicating with the Production Manager and Technical Director.

Organizational Management

  • Foster clear communication and expectations with staff.
  • Work closely with the Technical Director and Production Manager to promote a positive working environment.
  • Submit receipts on time and adhere to budgets.
  • Develop organizational systems for the shop and theater.
  • Collaborate with extra hires to complete projects on schedule.

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of theater experience managing teams and carpentry crews in build/load-in roles.
  • Knowledge of standard scenery construction practices (wood and metal).
  • Proficient in operating saws, power tools, welding, pneumatics, and hydraulics.
  • Comfortable working at heights over 15’ and able to lift/carry 50 lbs.
  • Welding (MIG) and metalworking experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of theatrical rigging is a plus.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work calmly under pressure in a fast-paced environment with strict deadlines.
  • Occasional flexible work hours may be required.
