Job summary

Motional in Boston seeks a Tech Lead Manager for Planning to guide motion planning software for autonomous vehicles. You will lead a team, define architecture, and work with Localization, Perception, Prediction, Controls, ML Products, and Systems Engineering to deliver state-of-the-art planning solutions.

The role requires leadership to mentor engineers, drive cutting-edge algorithms, and ensure production readiness with a strong emphasis on safety and reliability.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of experience managing a development team and mentoring others.
• Masters or PhD in Robotics, Electrical/Computer Engineering, CS, ME, or related field.
• Proven track record delivering production-quality motion planners in a leadership role.
• Advanced proficiency in search algorithms.
• Experience in motion planning solutions with ML.
• Expertise in C++ software development, Linux, and Python, with SQL knowledge.
• Strong motion planning theory and practice under uncertainty and dynamic actors.
• Knowledge of localization, perception, prediction, motion planning, and control for AVs.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and management skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead and develop a team within the motion planning organization, responsible for planning algorithm and constraint generation.
• Provide technical direction with architects, allocate resources, manage execution and technical debt.
• Deliver a robust, scalable planner with safety at all stages from design to deployment.
• Use metrics-driven approaches to improve components and processes.
• Advance planning methodologies and data-driven strategies.
• Promote diversity and inclusion in products and personnel.
• Mentor engineers, give constructive feedback, and foster an inclusive environment.
• Generate innovative ideas, define a team vision, and consider the holistic robotaxi system.
• Implement and review algorithms and code with rigorous engineering practices.
