Job summary

Leonardo Helicopters is seeking an Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) US Technical Leader in Philadelphia, PA. The role leads certification planning, FAA interactions, and program-wide E3 strategies for tiltrotor programs under US engineering governance.

You will manage complex certification processes, develop SOWs, and mentor a US engineering team while pursuing new business opportunities and industry collaboration. Strong leadership and EMC expertise are essential.

Qualifications

  • Five+ years in transport-category certification programs (Part25 or Part29).
  • Experience with electro-avionics, EMC, HIRF, direct/indirect lightning effects.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure integration, qualification and certification at system level for AW609/US programs.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3)-US Technical Leader

Department: Engineering

Reports to: Structure and Dynamic Systems - USA Products

Summary of Position: (Brief description of overall responsibilities and function)

Responsibilities
  1. Perimeter of responsibility is all products where the FAA is the approving authority as well as the required support to Part 21 and Part 145 Engineering activities.
  2. Act as part of the managerial chain of the engineering, contributing to plan and organise the activities to achieve overall US Engineering targets, jointly with LH Head of Electromagnetic Environmental Effects, pursuing the share of common solutions and processes on clusters of programs and use of common approach to development and certification/qualification processes.
  3. Work together with Electromagnetic Environmental Effects Technical Area SMEs to guarantee coherent design solutions and methodologies, knowledge sharing and competencies development, contributing to the definition of architecture and requirements within the area of competence.
  4. Accountable for FAA certification activities pertaining to Electromagnetic Environmental Effects working closely with FAA representatives and DER's.
  5. Ensure multi program management to better leverage on use of available resources and competencies, reinforcing industrial performances oversight for the Electromagnetic Environmental Effects Technical Area LHUSC perimeter.
  6. Actively seek and support US business development opportunities including research and development and new aircraft programs and derivatives. Participate in bid and proposal activities.
  7. Develop tiltrotor technology and best practices, participate in industry working groups and serves as an advocate for tiltrotors and the AW609.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • 1. Ensure integration, qualification and certification at system level. Support design, testing and analysis necessary to show compliance to certification rules. Serve as manager of integrated system-level activities at AWPC including conforming test articles, dispositioning findings/QN's, resolving FAA issue papers, providing field investigation services to define failure modes, releasing test plans/reports, solving problems, and communicating among the various stakeholders.
  • 2. Define statements of work (SOW's), develop local technical capabilities and execute specific design activities including but not limited to industrialization, customer modifications, and product improvements in full alignment with Technical Area.
  • 3. Accountable for technical certification activities and to show design compliance of the technical solutions to the FAA. Work closely with the FAA and DER in supporting showing compliance to applicable technical, programmatic and certification requirements.
  • 4. Jointly support, together with LH Heads of Technical Area, the planning and execution of activities for an efficient demonstration of compliance of the design solutions across the product lines.
  • 5. Coordinate and be responsible for day-to-day management of local US Team.
  • 6. Together with Technical Area Managers, manage and develop the US Team including performance evaluations, support career growth and learning objectives, and provide the encouragement and guidance to ensure success. Support long term company objectives with skill forecasting and recruiting to establish a strong technical base for the AW609 program and US-based engineering department.
  • 7. Responsible for coordinating with Head of Technical Area, the SOW for the activities to define, working with Engineering Governance, the budget based on activities.
  • 9. Responsible for EVMS plans with certification documents and milestones, identifying the certification risks and promoting recovery actions. Responsible for budget development in collaboration with the technical areas and for the performance to budget of the local team, including external off-load.
  • 10. Actively seek and support US business development opportunities including research and development and new aircraft programs and derivatives. Participate in bid and proposal activities. Develop technology and best practices, implement innovative solutions to provide customer value, participate in industry working groups, and serve as an advocate for tiltrotors and AW609.
Qualifications for Position
A. Education
  • Master in Engineering, Phd is considered a plus
B. Experience
  • 1. Five+ years of experience participating in transport-category certification programs (Part25 or Part29).
  • 2. Five+ years of technical experience and responsibility of teams involved in design, development, test and analysis of electro-avionics systems in the frame of Electromagnetic Environmental Effect discipline: Intrasystem-EMC, High Intensity Radiated Fields (HIRF), Direct and Indirect Effect of Lightning
  • 3. 1 years+ of experience performing Project Management duties.
C. Competencies & Attributes
  • 1. Strong understanding electro-avionic systems and systems testing to show compliance to system and certification requirements applicable to the E3 Technical Discipline (i.e. 14 CFR 29.1316, 29.1317, 29.1309, 29.1327, 29.1431, 29.610). Understanding and practical experience in environmental qualification practices, sw and complex hw development i.a.w. civil qualification standards.
  • 2. Understanding and proven experience on manage suppliers in the electro-avionic equipment qualification activities as per RTCA DO-160 (Section 15-17-18-19-20-21-22-23-25).
  • 3. Understanding and proven experience of compliance demonstration process at Aircraft System Level as per applicable guidance material: SAE ARP5583A (HIRF), SAE ARP60493 (EMC), SAE ARP5415B (IEL)
  • 4. Practical experience with FAA certification processes.
  • 5. Proven experience to create plans, communicate them, and execute them efficiently across a diverse and complex organization. EVMS experience preferred.
  • 6. Strong communication and presentation skills, ability to effectively communicate to all levels of the organization, ability to negotiate win-win solutions in the presence of conflict and ambiguity, and ability to be a persuasive advocate to internal and external customers.
  • 7. High integrity and technical expertise as necessary to be a primary Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) interface with certification authorities.
D. Licensure/Certification
  • DER Certificate of Designation is a plus.
