Job Description Summary:

The TLA demonstrates the ability to perform phlebotomy and a variety of technical and clerical functions in the Laboratory based on the needs of the individual campus. He/she performs routine laboratory procedures based on principles of human growth and development according to established lab guidelines, using customer focus, teamwork, adaptability to change, problem solving, communication, and personal excellence. The position handles blood, tissue, fecal matter, sputum, urine, spinal fluid, and other body fluids. Specimens may be contaminated with infectious diseases, including HIV and other blood-borne pathogens.

Responsibilities and Duties:
  1. 70% Phlebotomy and/or specimen processing: Perform procedures depending on job location, adhering to safety and infection control practices. Provide customer service to clinicians and clients. Communicate professionally with physician office staff, clinical staff, patients, and their families. Use service recovery where necessary.
  2. 15% Associated computer-related tasks: Manage LIS, e-Source, and other relevant systems.
  3. 5% Training: Train new employees and students.
  4. 5% Regulatory compliance: Ensure adherence to standards including National Patient Safety Goals, CAP, OSHA, JCAHO, CMS, OSH, and Laboratory Policies and Procedures.
  5. 5% Competency maintenance: Maintain required competencies and education (ACE). Perform miscellaneous tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Driver's License from the Department of Motor Vehicles
