Technical Game Designer - Game Systems (Unreal Engine 5, AAA European Football)

This role is posted on behalf of the following client: A Los Angeles-based AAA sports game studio building the next generation of professional football (soccer) games in Unreal Engine 5. The team is focused on creating highly authentic, competitive match play paired with modern progression and live content systems. This studio environment emphasizes cross-discipline collaboration across design, engineering, animation, UX, and production.

Role Overview

Seeking a highly skilled Technical Game Designer to design, implement, and iterate core game systems that shape how a AAA European football video game feels, behaves, and engages players—across gameplay, modes, progression, and meta structures. This position works hands-on in Unreal Engine 5 (Blueprints and gameplay scripting) to prototype, tune, and ship systems while bridging creative design vision and engineering execution. Collaboration with designers, engineers, animators, UX, production, and QA is central to delivering robust, reusable, well-documented, and performance-optimized football systems (from player mechanics to match-level logic). A cover letter is required with all applications, detailing sports game development experience and relevant football/soccer experience or fandom, if applicable.

What You'll Do
  • Implement gameplay systems in Unreal Engine 5 using Blueprints and gameplay scripting, ensuring fidelity, performance, and scalability.
  • Prototype and iterate new systems and features rapidly in-editor, incorporating feedback from design reviews and playtests; tune for balance, player experience, and performance using telemetry and design judgment.
  • Partner with engineering and multidisciplinary teams (AI, animation, UX, economy, live ops) to define system architecture, data flow, and scripting standards; document specs/variables/use cases; debug gameplay logic and support QA; support seasonal content pipelines and live tuning processes.
Who You Are
  • 3+ years of professional game design or technical design experience, including at least one shipped title (AAA or high-quality).
  • Hands-on Unreal Engine 5 experience (Blueprints and gameplay scripting) with strong gameplay systems design fundamentals (mechanics, progression logic, modular systems) and the ability to implement, test, and optimize iteratively in engine.
  • Collaborative and highly communicative with strong documentation skills; passion for football (soccer) games and an understanding of how systems drive player engagement (bonus: sports/competitive multiplayer, replication/gameplay abilities, UE5 C++ integration, data-driven workflows, analytics-informed tuning, live cadence/progression/seasonal feature design).
