Technical Editor - Marine Science Job at AIS Inc in Falmouth

A.I.S., Inc.(AIS)is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline.

AIS is seeking a Technical Editor of Marine Sciences to support NOAAs Northeast Fisheries Science Center.

Primary Function:

This role involves managing the editing and publication of scientific manuscripts and technical documents, ensuring compliance with NOAA standards and Section 508 accessibility requirements. The editor collaborates closely with researchers to prepare materials for peer-reviewed journals and internal series and serves as the local administrator for NOAAs Research Publication Tracking System (RPTS).

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Edit and format scientific manuscripts for clarity, consistency, and adherence to style guides
  • Guide authors through the publication process, including journal submission and copyright policies
  • Maintain internal publication databases and manage publication workflows
  • Ensure compliance with agency style and accessibility (Section 508) standards
  • Administer the Research Publication Tracking System (RPTS) for NEFSC users
  • Represent NEFSC in NOAA and NOAA Fisheries RPTS User Group meetings
  • Provide training and support to authors as needed

Compensation: Candidates will be paid an hourly rate to be negotiated and total compensation will vary depending on candidates depth of experience. This is a fulltime position. AIS benefits package includes health and dental insurance, vacation, sick and holiday benefits.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Natural Sciences, or a related field
  • At least 5 years of professional experience in technical editing, particularly with scientific manuscripts in the natural sciences
  • Proven expertise in copyediting and formatting scientific and technical documents
  • Familiarity with scientific publication processes and editorial workflows
  • Working knowledge of the Council for Science Editors (CSE) style and other agency publication standards
  • Experience ensuring documents meet Section 508 accessibility requirements
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to collaborate with researchers to interpret and improve complex scientific content
  • Experience managing publication tracking systems, preferably NOAAs Research Publication Tracking System (RPTS)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and document editing tools
