Job summary

James Madison University’s School of Theatre and Dance seeks a Technical Director to oversee construction, load-in, and strike, supervise the scene shop and staff, and ensure safety and educational value in productions. This is a full-time, 12-month Administrative and Professional faculty position in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, reporting to the School Director.

Qualifications

• MFA in Technical Direction, Theatre Production, or a related field, or a Bachelor’s degree with substantial professional technical direction experience.
• Proficiency with technical drafting and design software (Vectorworks, AutoCAD, or similar).
• Experience supervising student crews, over-hire labor, or production staff in a theatrical/educational setting.
• Knowledge of ESTA, OSHA, and NEC safety guidelines; strong organizational skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead construction, load-in, and strike of scenery and rigging for all STAD productions and student-led shows.
• Develop construction plans, drafts, schedules, and budgets for scenery and properties.
• Supervise scene-shop staff and student workers; ensure safety and standards.
• Collaborate with designers, Production Manager, and guest artists to manage budgets and timelines.
• Mentor students and coordinate with Forbes Center staff to support education and production processes.
