Job summary

The University of Texas at Austin's Texas Performing Arts is seeking an Assistant Technical Director to join the Fabrication Studios team on the UT Main Campus in Austin. This role works with the Technical Director and Lead Fabricator to manage daily operations, supervise shop staff, and lead students in scenic construction, load-ins, and strikes.

Responsibilities include serving as Technical Director on productions, drafting drawings, budgeting, inventory control, and mentoring students through

Qualifications

• Diploma (High School) or GED.
• Strong background in drafting, production planning, budgeting, scenic carpentry, welding, and rigging.
• Ability to collaborate in a fast-paced environment and solve problems.
• Extensive experience with Vectorworks or CAD drafting programs.
• Experience with CNC routers.
• Strong desire to work with students and supervise others.
• Valid Driver’s License; ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work at heights.
• Demonstrated competencies: Collaboration, Cost Estimation, Delegation, Communication, Adaptability, Problem Solving.

Responsibilities

• Serve as Technical Director on productions as assigned and create purchase estimates.
• Draft construction drawings for fabrication projects.
• Manage Fabrication Studios internal materials store and budget.
• Supervise fabrication, installation and strikes, directing students and hourly hires.
• Instruct and mentor students; participate in courses, residencies, workshops.
• Load and drive university vehicles when required.
