Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Production Management: Coordinate and oversee all technical production aspects of performances, rehearsals, events, load-ins, strikes, and changeovers.
  • Collaboration & Support: Partner with faculty, directors, guest artists, and rental clients to determine production needs and provide technical support.
  • Stage & Backstage Operations: Plan, supervise, and execute stage setup, lighting, sound, rigging, and backstage operations with a safe workshop environment.
  • Facility & Equipment Maintenance: Oversee maintenance, inspections, and repair of equipment and systems, coordinating with outside services as needed.
  • Team Supervision: Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise student workers, stage crews, and freelance technicians.
  • Administration & Logistics: Manage PAC master schedule, maintain equipment inventories, and procure upgrades.

SUMMARY

Temple College is seeking a dynamic Technical Director to lead production operations for the Mary Alice Marshall Performing Arts Center (PAC), a premier cultural hub featuring a main stage and the Jackson-Graeter Backstage Theatre. Backed by a rich 50-year legacy of artistic excellence, this role oversees the technical execution for all institutional concerts, theatrical performances, and campus events. The Technical Director serves as a central collaborator within the creative community, partnering with fine arts faculty, supporting students, coordinating with community organizations, and managing production logistics for world-renowned guest artists hosted by the college.

  • Associates degree or equivalent
  • Relevant experience in technical, performing arts productions and operations.
PREFERRED
  • Bachelor’s degree in Entertainment Technology, Technical Theatre, or other Performing Arts/Education related discipline.
  • Related experience in performing arts production, venue operations, technical services, or a closely related field.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Production Management: Coordinate and oversee all technical production aspects of performances, rehearsals, special events, load-ins, strikes, and changeovers.
  • Collaboration & Support: Partner with faculty, directors, guest artists, and rental clients to determine production needs and deliver seamless technical support for all college and facility events.
  • Stage & Backstage Operations: Plan, supervise, and execute stage setup, lighting, sound, rigging, and backstage operations while maintaining a clean, safe, and organized workshop environment.
  • Facility & Equipment Maintenance: Oversee the preventative maintenance, routine inspection, and repair of all technical equipment and facility systems, coordinating with outside service providers as needed.
  • Team Supervision: Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise student workers, stage crews, and freelance technicians to ensure efficient and safe event execution.
  • Administration & Logistics: Manage the Fine Arts master schedule for the Performing Arts Center (PAC), maintain accurate equipment inventories, and recommend/procure equipment upgrades and purchases.

KNOWLEDGE
  • Technical Systems: Deep understanding of ETC lighting ecosystems, digital audio networks, and theatrical rigging mechanics.
  • Safety Compliance: Strong working knowledge of standard stage safety protocols and OSHA compliance.
SKILLS
  • Blueprint Interpretation: Proficiency in reading and translating technical riders, Computer-Aided Design (CAD) drawings, and stage plots.
  • Advanced Diagnostics: High-level diagnostic skills for troubleshooting complex signal flows and equipment failures on the fly.
ABILITIES
  • High-Pressure Decision Making: Ability to maintain composure and solve critical technical problems during live events.
  • Cross-Functional Communication: Ability to translate complex technical requirements for non-technical faculty, students, and clients.
PHYSICAL EFFORT
  • Safely lift and move equipment or materials up to 50 pounds.
  • Remain standing or stationary for extended periods during events.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Elevated Environments: Routine exposure to heights while working on ladders, scaffolding, and catwalks.
  • Chemical Exposure: Occasional exposure to standard stage production chemicals, including theatrical fog/haze fluids, paints, adhesives, and solvents.
WORK SCHEDULE

Because this role is central to our live events, all essential duties are performed in person at our on-site location during designated hours. You'll need a flexible schedule to thrive here, as hours will adapt—including evenings and weekends—to align with our dynamic performance calendar.
