Job Description

***This role can be FULLY REMOTE or HYBRID (in office days Tuesday-Thursday) if in close proximity to our office in Merrill, WI.

Who should apply:

If you're an experienced commercial property claims professional who enjoys analyzing complex losses, solving challenging claim scenarios, making sound claim decisions, and mentoring others, this may be the next opportunity for you!

This role is ideal for individuals with expertise handling large, complex commercial property claims, including catastrophic losses, structural building damage, multi-location losses, business income exposure, coverage disputes, public adjuster involvement, and other high-exposure claim situations. Successful candidates are comfortable independently developing claim strategies, setting reserves, and negotiating fair claim resolutions within their authority while working exclusively in a desk-based claims environment. As this role continues to evolve, you will also have opportunities to share technical expertise, contribute to training initiatives, and mentor fellow claim representatives.

On any given day, you'll:

  • Perform claim tasks timely and document claim files appropriately. Proactively manage claim activities to ensure fair claim resolution. Handle all claims in accordance with state and federal laws.
  • Make complex coverage decisions by gathering information necessary to make an informed decision in a fair, equitable, and ethical manner. Deny losses within authority level, providing detailed explanation, citing facts, and policy language.
  • Perform a thorough investigation based upon the type, complexity, and severity of the claim. Upon completion of the investigation, thoroughly analyze the cause, scope, and extent of damages; evaluate applicable coverage, exclusions, limitations, and endorsements; assess claim exposure and reserving needs; and develop a documented strategy for resolution of the claim in accordance with policy provisions and company guidelines.
  • Develop and execute reserve strategies for complex property claims by evaluating damage scope, coverage applicability, settlement exposure, litigation risk, and claim complexity. Lead negotiations with insureds, contractors, public adjusters, attorneys, and other stakeholders to achieve fair and timely claim resolution. Proactively partner with claims leadership on high-exposure matters, providing recommendations and strategic direction. Authorize and issue accurate payments within authority while maintaining comprehensive, audit-ready documentation and regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain a professional, courteous, and helpful approach when communicating in-person, on the phone, or through email and other correspondence with internal and external customers, business partners, and brokers.
  • Investigate and refer identified claims to Loss Recovery Services, as applicable.
  • Adhere to company-established vendor utilization standards and escalation protocols when determining the need for engineers, consultants, forensic experts, and other specialized resources. Ensure vendor assignments are appropriately justified, effectively managed, cost-conscious, and aligned with claim complexity and business expectations.
  • Engage in direct investigation, control, and settlement negotiations.
  • Present complex claim files during roundtables and claims committee meetings.

Here's what we expect:

  • Eight or more years in commercial technical insurance claim roles with increasing responsibilities is required.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred. A combination of equivalent education and/or experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Evidence of continuing education in the insurance industry is required.
  • Completion of AIC and/or CPCU is preferred.
  • Necessary Knowledge and Abilities:

Ability to obtain and maintain state adjusting license requirements and complete continuing education requirements.

  • Advanced knowledge of recoveries such as subrogation, reinsurance, apportionment, and deductibles.
  • Advanced negotiation skills.
  • Strong listening, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of policy terminology, legal principles involving insurance, and emerging industry trends.
  • Effective planning and organization skills.
