Job description

Under the general supervision of the Radiation Therapy Manager, the Technical Assistant performs a variety of patient care duties relating to the general operations of radiation therapy treatment delivery and simulation. The incumbent will greet and orient patients to the department on the first day of treatment. The incumbent's main focus will be assisting the radiation therapist's to maintain efficient workflows. The individual must have the ability to work independently in a fast paced environment and also work well within a group setting. The incumbent works under the direct supervision of and serves as an assistant to the Radiation Therapists.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Help Radiation Therapists streamline patient workflow and maintain the throughput of the treatment day. Meet and greet the patients on the first treatment day. Understand patient safety regarding radiation exposure. Appropriately address patients identified as fall risks. Participate in all patient orientations on the first day of treatment. Orientation includes: review all waiting room locations with the patients, review the daily check-in procedure, dressing room locations and waiting areas, refreshment stands and treatment areas. Help the Radiation Therapists maintain efficiency in the treatment rooms by ensuring the next patients are always gowned and ready to enter the treatment room. Stock treatment rooms with linen and medical supplies. Empty soiled linen carts when necessary from various locations throughout dept. Replenish supply of clean patient linens in dressing rooms when necessary. Assist with patient Wayfinding between departments (Lunder, Cox and Protons). Assist the Mold Room with the creation of patient immobilization devices. Assist with moving or transporting patient devices between departments (Lunder, Cox and Protons).

1.11 Ensure accurate patient identification process.

1.12 Assist the Radiation Therapists in preparing/setting up the treatment room for treatments.

1.13 Assist Radiation Therapists with set-up and patient leveling for patient treatments.

1.14 Assist Radiation Therapists to verify the correct treatment parameters prior to treatment.

1.15 Assist patients with scheduling and appointment questions.

1.16 Physical strength to lift accessories weighing up to 40 lbs.

1.17 Assist Radiation Therapists as needed.

1.18 Other duties as assigned.

Other Duties:

Must be able to show appropriate levels of compassionate care for patients.

Must be able to work effectively in a team environment.

Must maintain equipment and order in the treatment area.

Participate in the clinical instruction of student radiation therapists and new RO staff.

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills
  • Must be willing to be flexible dependent upon the needs of the dept.
  • Must be able to speak, read and write English


EDUCATION:

Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE:

1 year of previous health care experience preferred.
