Technical Assistant - Industrial Design

Job Summary: The purpose of a technical assistant in KRESA CTE/EFE Programming is to support the success and growth of students who are identified as Special Populations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support student success by assisting them individually or in small groups.
  • Assist the teacher in the implementation of IEP or 504 Accommodations as needed.
  • Promote the mental, physical, social, and emotional well-being of all students.
  • Encourage identified students to develop professional skills through good attendance, positive behavior, and academic skill attainment.
  • Complete a monthly report of attendance and academic progress and supports provided for each special populations’ student.
  • Complete all forms necessary to the special populations project by the deadline.
  • Attend meetings and professional development (PD) days pertaining to the special populations’ project.
  • Perform other functions as required by the special populations project and specified through the Student Services Coordinator.
  • Regular and consistent attendance.
  • Must have knowledge of and comply with the policies and procedures contained in the Portage Public Schools Handbook.

Technical Assistants Do

  • Work directly with students.
  • Assist the instructor during lessons by helping students that may have difficulty in understanding and/or keeping up with the class.
  • Assist the instructor by working with individuals or small groups of students on follow-up activities assigned by the instructor.
  • Reinforce the teacher’s instruction by giving review and practice activities for individuals or small groups.
  • Work under the direct supervision of the regular instructor.
  • Relate well with students and staff.
  • Assist substitute instructor when the need arises.
  • Help students to relate to others.
  • Work with the instructor to help plan for the needs of special populations’ students.
  • Help in the individual evaluation of each special populations’ student.
  • Submit reports to coordinator when due.
  • Attend training in special populations teaching techniques.
  • Have two years of occupational experience or an associate degree and one year of occupational experience.

Technical Assistants Do Not

  • Teach a class.
  • Enter grades or attendance in the online grading system.
  • Run errands or do busy work for instructor.
  • Become involved in competition with the regular instructor.
  • Need a vocational teaching certificate.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Relevant work experience in industrial technology.
  • Relevant industry certifications or credentials are beneficial in this position.
  • Experience working with students/young adults.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience working effectively with staff, students, and community.
  • Demonstrated abilities in the area of interpersonal communication.
  • A high degree of patience, ability, and willingness to learn new skills and take direction.
