Job summary

BARNES-JEWISH HOSPITAL at Washington University Medical Center is seeking a patient care support role to assist licensed nurses in a high-volume surgical unit in Missouri. The role provides direct patient care and supports safety, education, and daily activities.

Responsibilities include ADL assistance, vital signs, data collection, and documentation, with a focus on family-centered care and patient safety. Weekend and night rotations are required; hospital offers comprehensive benefits.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Preferred CNA or equivalent medical experience.
  • Certification as CNA preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Implements direct patient care under supervision, promoting patient and family centered care.
  • Administers or assists patients with ADLs, performs vital signs, intake/output, fall and pressure ulcer prevention measures, urinary catheter care, phlebotomy, or point of care testing as requested.
  • Collects clinical data and information on patients, and reports changes in patient status to the nurse.
  • Assists nurse with patient and family education. Documents all patient care activities provided with correct medical terminology. Acts as 1:1 patient safety sitter as necessary.
  • Ensures availability of supplies and equipment to meet each patient's needs.
  • Participates in activities that promote patient safety, quality and regulatory compliance. Participates in professional development.

GI/GU Service is consistently ranked in the top 20 in the nation by U.S. News & World Reports. We care for a diverse population of patients needing colorectal and urology surgery. We are leaders in providing Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) care. Our surgeons are leading the way in refining surgical procedures and non-operative techniques, to reduce pain, complications, and to improve outcomes. We are a 38 bed surgical unit with a goal of providing excellent care to all of our patients. Our average nurse to patient ratio is 1:4. Preferred Qualifications
Role Purpose

Provides direct patient care to support the licensed professional nurses responsible for a team of patients to ensure a safe environment for patients by reducing risk of harm. Collects vital information on the patient and reports such to the nursing team which contributes to the overall assessment of each patient and any changes to a patient's condition.
