Job summary

WVU Health System in Wheeling, WV, is seeking a Radiology Support Aide to assist with the delivery of radiology services. You will support technologists, prepare patients for procedures, and help maintain a safe, efficient department environment.

The role involves greeting patients, verifying orders, assisting with patient transport, and coordinating outpatient and inpatient workflow within Radiology.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire.

Provides support for the delivery of a full range of medical imaging procedures.

Assists and Performs a variety of technical and patient care related duties enhancing the effective and efficient delivery of radiology services under the direct and indirect supervision of the registered professional technologist.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
  1. 1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. 2. Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date. To be completed as established by department: (Administered at Department level) 1. Competency in the use of safe patient handling equipment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
  1. 1. One (1) year of experience in a clinical setting
CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. 1. Greets patients upon arrival to the Radiology department and consistently facilitates the patient's department experience.
  2. 2. Answers all phone calls in a timely and courteous manner, identifying self and unit at all times.
  3. 3. Upon receiving written orders, verifies completeness and notifies ordering physicians of any inaccuracies.
  4. 4. Supports the Radiologic Technologists in the planning and execution of routine imaging procedures meeting the standards of the department.
  5. 5. Prepares patients for basic examinations and diagnostic procedures according to department procedure.
  6. 6. Informs appropriate personnel of patient arrival for appointment.
  7. 7. Assesses the patient's needs related to comfort, and provides support accordingly.
  8. 8. Provides direct patient care as needed to facilitate routine imaging services.
  9. 9. Safely assists in the transport and handling of all patients according to WVUH’S patient handing policy.
  10. 10. Escorts the patient to and from the procedure room and assists as needed with patient arrival and departure from the department.
  11. 11. Maintains a clean and safe environment according to department procedures to help prevent and/ or control infection to provide for safety of patient, visitors and employees.
  12. 12. Promotes the team approach to providing Radiology services by positively interacting with the technical, support, nursing, residents and medical staff.
  13. 13. Observes and reports all patient concerns/ changes in condition to a registered technologist, nurse or physician immediately.
  14. 14. Assists in routine unit operations as directed/ needed to assure smooth communication and functioning of the unit.
  15. 15. Coordinates the outpatient and inpatient department workflow by maintaining communication between the department and patient floors, ED and OR.
  16. 16. Provides direct patient care by assisting with gowning and basic physical care to promote comfort.
  17. 17. Engages in problem solving, crisis management and systems implementation throughout the hospital to promote and support efficient, high quality, cost effective patient care.
  18. 18. Facilitates transportation of inpatients and ED patients to and from imaging department.
  19. 19. Transports patients back to ED following imaging procedure.
For facilities with specialty accreditation requirements:
  1. 1. Completion of annual required education related to specialty accreditation as defined by accreditation standards. Training may be completed through CBLs, trainings, In-services, and competency validation.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  1. 1. Lift, push and pull up to 50 lbs.
  2. 2. Requires strength and or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing and walking. Handling of materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Pushing/pulling carts weighting up to 200 pounds.
  3. 3. Stand and walk for up to 8 hours a day.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
  1. 1. Exposure to minimal radiation with in the national standards of occupational guidelines. Monitored by radiation safety and use of dosimeter.
  2. 2. Exposure to airborne particles and body fluids.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  1. 1. Ability to interact positively with patients, families, and members of the health care team.
  2. 2. Ability to prioritize and deal with a variety of situations simultaneously.
  3. 3. Demonstrate competency in the use of safe patient handling equipment.
  4. 4. Ability to multi- task in a busy setting.
  5. 5. Knowledge of radiology information systems.
