Job summary

Yale NewHaven Health is seeking an Emergency Department Technician to support clinical care under RN direction. Responsibilities include vital signs, EKGs, phlebotomy, and ensuring a clean, safe patient environment.

You will collaborate with the nursing team and multidisciplinary staff, assist with patient flow, and help meet the department’s service excellence standards while maintaining patient privacy and dignity.

Qualifications

The Emergency Department Technician has the knowledge and ability to perform all duties as outlined in the Nursing Assistant job description in addition to responsibilities unique to the Emergency Department. Major functions include coordination of the clinical care of the patient in collaboration with the Registered Nurse and multidisciplinary team. Assistance in the delivery of patient care and performance of duties include but are not limited to: obtaining vital signs and patient weights, performing and reporting 12-lead EKG's, blood glucose monitoring, room and environmental readiness, splinting and application or orthopedic devices and all as delegated by the registered nurse.

  • 12.Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient-s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient-s requirements relative to his or her specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit's/area's/ Department's policies and procedures.
  • 13.Document accurately, completely, and in a timely fashion in the Electronic Medical Record.
  • 14.Identify need to reorder supplies and coordinate with the Unit Secretary or Office Manager following established policies and procedures.
  • 15.Ensure that all nursing work areas and patient rooms are adequately stocked including all supply and equipment carts.
  • 16.Obtain and record patient vital signs and weights as delegated by the Registered Nurse.
  • 17.Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, Nurse Manager, or Physician, apply splints, orthopedic devices and perform crutch walking training.
  • 18.Monitor and provide care to patients in the Behavioral Health Unit as directed by the Registered Nurse, Nurse Manager, or Physician.
  • 19.Greet and receive patients presenting to the triage window utilizing the Service Excellence Standards and assist the Registered Nurse with facilitation of patient flow and room placement.
  • 20.Identify changes in patient condition and communicate significant observations to the nurse in a timely fashion.
  • 21.Perform 12-lead EKG's and report findings to the Physician.
  • 22.Conducts hourly rounds on assigned patients in collaboration with the Registered Nurse.
  • 23.Assists patients with activities of daily living and personal hygiene needs.
  • 24.Perform phlebotomy on appropriate patients as delegated by the Registered Nurse after successfully completing phlebotomy training.
  • 25.Demonstrate compliance with fall prevention protocols.
  • 26.Compile, secure, and document patients personal belongings following established policies and procedures.
  • 27.Perform glucose monitoring and document results in the patient’s medical record.
  • 28.Ensure patients are accurately identified utilizing the Safety Absolute of Name and Date of Birth.
  • 29.Provide a clear and concise handoff to the oncoming staff member at the end of the shift.
  • 30.Provide and participate in post-mortem care.
  • 31.Apply remote telemetry boxes to patients as directed by the Registered Nurse.
  • 32.Assist in the care of patients in restraints as outlined in established policies and procedures.
  • 33.Demonstrate safe technique for ambulation, transfers, and use of assistive devices.
  • 34.Assist patients with toileting and elimination; deliver, collect, and empty bedpans, urinals, and bedside commodes.
  • 35.Function independently with treatments, procedures, and equipment within the parameters of the unit specific departmental competencies.
  • 36.Assist the Physician with preparation and set up for suture repair as outlined in departmental policies and procedures.
  • 37.Attend 75 % of staff meetings annually.
Qualifications

EDUCATION

High school graduate or equivalent

EXPERIENCE

1-2 years related job experience preferred.

LICENSURE

A minimum of a high school diploma or GED; and CNA or other certification, i.e. Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy Technician, EMT, or Student Nurse who has completed one semester of clinical experience.

SPECIAL SKILLS

The employee must be highly flexible and willing to perform each role as needed and directed depending upon the needs of the patient care unit and Nursing Department. Must also have the following skills: Able to read, write and clearly speak the English language, basic clerical and computer skills, experience with medical terminology, knowledge of basic patient care and basic mathematical skills. Demonstrate the ability to prioritize and adjust work plans based on the need of the patients and as directed.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

Standing/walking for more than half of the day. (Sitting for most of the day when working as a monitor tech.) Frequently bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting and lifting. Must be able to push/pull/lift patients ranging from five (5) to three hundred (300) pounds. May be exposed to infectious diseases. Will be exposed to physical, mental and emotional illness as well as end of like conditions and death. Moderate stress and risk of injury from patient care.
