Job summary

Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH) seeks a capable phlebotomy assistant to perform phlebotomy, EKGs, and patient transport in the Emergency Department. You will work under licensed personnel, maintain certifications, and support clerical tasks while ensuring patient safety and efficient care delivery.

Requirements include a high school diploma or GED, phlebotomy training or 1 year of experience, plus healthcare experience preferred. The role is on-site in Prestonsburg, KY.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Performs phlebotomy per hospital procedure.
  • Identifies patients and labels specimens.
  • Determines priority of STAT draws.
  • Delivers specimens to lab and transports patients.
  • Performs EKGs and assists in patient care under licensed personnel.
  • Maintains certifications and safety training compliance.
  • Assists with clerical tasks and reception duties.
  • Maintains department cleanliness and equipment.

Overview

Functions under the direction of the Registered Nurse, acts as assistive personnel to provide care to patients, some of the functions include customer service skills, obtaining vital sign, point of care testing, phlebotomy, EKG's and transportation of patients in the Emergency Department.

Functions under the direction of the Registered Nurse, acts as assistive personnel to provide care to patients, some of the functions include customer service skills, obtaining vital sign, point of care testing, phlebotomy, EKG's and transportation of patients in the Emergency Department.

Responsibilities
  • Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture, fingerstick, heelstick and bleeding time) according to established procedure of the Hospital.
  • Identifies patients and properly labels specimen tubes.
  • Determines priority of STAT draws.
  • Ensures timely delivery of all patient specimens to the laboratory for testing via the ED chute or transportation to the laboratory.
  • Performs electrocardiograms (EKGs).
  • Demonstrates the skills and judgment necessary to provide direct care to patients under the direction of licensed personnel.
  • Maintains current knowledge and required certifications.
  • Attends all required safety training programs and can describe responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job-related hazards.
  • Assumes all other duties and responsibilities as necessary.
  • Assumes clerical duties necessary to assist the healthcare team in providing patient care.
  • Receives and directs phone calls as needed within the department.
  • Acts as a receptionist, greets patients, and answers phones when required.
  • Is responsible for the daily cleaning of equipment and maintaining neatness throughout the department.
Qualifications
Education
  • High school diploma or GED required.
Experience
  • Phlebotomy training and/or a minimum of one (1) year experience as a phlebotomist required.
  • Formal training or equivalent experience, such as a Nursing Assistant, CNA, or EMT preferred.
  • Previous hospital or nursing home experience preferred.
Required Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
  • Ability to communicate effectively and document information accurately.
  • Ability to deal efficiently and effectively with a wide variety of individuals.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-based care setting.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology preferred.
  • Basic computer knowledge preferred.
  • Ability to move or lift patients and equipment.
  • Required to comply with OSHA regulations for N95 respirator training and fit testing.
