Job summary

CoStar Group is seeking a Team Lead, Software Engineering in Richmond, VA to guide multiple software teams, drive AI-powered development, and ensure architecture ownership. The role emphasizes hands-on leadership and collaboration with product leaders to deliver on strategic objectives.

The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of web and API-driven system experience, strong OOP skills, and a track record of building scalable platforms.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university
  • 5+ years’ experience in web development and database technologies
  • 3+ years’ experience building large distributed, API-driven systems
  • Strong understanding of OOP and software design patterns
  • Experience using TypeScript, C#, SQL Server, AWS technologies, or similar tools
  • Experience leading a technical team, working through complex requirements and offering relevant, timely technical solutions
  • Understanding AI technologies and hands on experience in AI adoption and development
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; must communicate effectively with direct reports, peers, and senior management
  • Ability to motivate and build high performance software development teams
  • Familiarity with modern AI platforms, large language models, agent orchestration frameworks, or AI-assisted development tools
  • Understanding of observability, monitoring, telemetry analysis, and automated incident detection platforms

Responsibilities

As a Team Lead in Software Engineering, you will be responsible for providing project definition and implementation through hands-on management of multiple software development teams leveraging Agile Scrum development and project management best practices defined by the company. You will undertake the execution of software development projects to achieve the company’s strategic objectives and must work closely with Product Leaders & other managers.

CoStar is investing heavily in artificial intelligence to accelerate software delivery, improve platform observability, automate research and business workflows, enhance product experiences through intelligent agents and skills, and improve data quality across enterprise systems. Successful candidates will demonstrate a willingness to learn, adopt, and apply AI technologies responsibly to solve complex business and engineering challenges.

This position is located in Richmond, VA and offers a schedule of Monday to Thursday in office and the option to work from home on Friday.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for architecture, project ownership, and team leadership.
  • Lead team(s) of talented software developers in building applications and platforms using modern object oriented programming languages.
  • Act as a player-coach, who can mentor & coach highly productive team members.
  • Promote can-do attitude, engineering mindset and collaboration as fundamental team values.
  • Drive continuous improvement by focusing on engineering excellence.
  • Champion the adoption of AI-assisted software development practices to improve developer productivity, code quality, platform reliability, and operational efficiency.
  • Leverage AI-powered monitoring, anomaly detection, replayability, and observability capabilities to improve system resiliency, incident response, root cause analysis, and customer experience.
  • Partner with engineering and product teams to identify opportunities for intelligent processes that reduce manual effort, accelerate sales workflows, and improve operational effectiveness across CoStar platforms.
  • Lead a team in designing, implementing, and governing AI-powered solutions including skills, agents, tools, and workflow automations that enhance both internal productivity and customer-facing products.
  • Promote responsible AI adoption by ensuring solutions adhere to security, privacy, governance, and quality standards.
  • Manage and coordinate projects within teams and across departments.
  • Continually evaluate emerging technologies to identify opportunities, trends, and best practices that can be leveraged to strength CoStar’s technology platform and develop practices
Basic Qualifications

  • Understanding AI technologies and has hands on experience in AI adoption and development.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; Must be able to communicate at a level appropriate to the audience (direct reports, peers and senior management)
  • Ability to motivate and build high performance software development teams.
  • Familiarity with modern AI platforms, large language models (LLMs), agent orchestration frameworks, or AI-assisted development tools.
  • Understanding of observability, monitoring, replayability, telemetry analysis, and automated incident detection platforms.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Docker and container orchestration a plus.
  • Experience building AI features with Bedrock or Azure
  • Experience with OpenSearch is a plus
  • Experience with React for frontend development is a plus
  • Other technology areas we lean into; AWS S3, Lambda, SQS, Kafka, and Redis
  • Experience developing or managing AI-powered applications, agents, tools, search experiences, or intelligent automation platforms.
  • Experience leveraging AI to improve software engineering productivity, operational monitoring, research workflows, and data stewardship.
  • Experience implementing AI-assisted data quality solutions including deduplication, enrichment, classification, anomaly detection, and entity matching.

The final salary or hourly rate offered for this role will fall within the range set forth below based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, geographic location, skills, and competencies.

Base Compensation: $155,000.00-$203,000.00 Annually
