Team Lead of Physical Engineering, Substations (Utility)

United States (Remote)

Salary Range: $100,000 - $150,000/year

Based on the Denver, Colorado labor market.

Location: Lakewood, CO (local/in-office) or full-time remote candidates.

Role Overview:

As a Team Lead of Physical Engineering in the Utility Substations department, you will manage a team of engineers, drafters, and designers. Your primary responsibility is ensuring the accurate, timely, and quality completion of physical / structural substation engineering scopes assigned to the team. You will also assist in developing and enforcing the department’s Standard Best Practices (SBPs).

Leadership Responsibilities:

  • Oversee a team producing detailed-design packages, including general arrangements, elevations, foundation plans, structure design, bus and connection details, bill of materials, building plans, conductor stringing tables, fence details, permitting, structure loading diagrams, construction details, and supporting calculation packages.
  • Manage and coordinate design activities, project planning, team-level scheduling, and optimization.
  • Work with Directors to develop and maintain Workload Forecasting, ensuring an accurate active project list, milestone dates, and estimate to complete (ETC) hours.
  • Exemplify ownership and accountability over your team’s project portfolio, planning, and taking action to improve and maintain team performance.
  • Oversee the team’s weekly budgets and track project finances to maintain fiscal responsibility.
  • Address and mitigate project risks to prevent escalation and ensure continuity.
  • Understand NEI processes, best practices, standards, and policies thoroughly and provide guidance to your team as required.
  • Keep the team informed about the latest developments and ensure adherence to established standards.
  • Assess team strengths and weaknesses, ensuring continuous development through training and coaching.
  • Maintain expert-level knowledge of NEI's QA/QC processes and guide the team through these processes, ensuring compliance on every project.
  • Support business development, assist with marketing tasks, and support the development of project proposals as needed.
  • Support the client relationship to ensure ongoing satisfaction and collaboration.
  • Oversee the detailed physical design and engineering for all aspects of electric power substations, including generating plants, utility transmission and distribution, and industrial and commercial facilities.
  • Review the work of team members for general quality, accuracy, and adherence to NEI and/or client standards and processes.
  • Understand assigned scopes and develop engineering cost estimates, schedules, and assumptions to support change orders in coordination with the project manager.
  • Investigate and resolve technical issues within the team to ensure project continuity.
  • Prepare various documents and reports associated with projects, including cost estimates, budget reports, and proposals.
  • Attend safety training and adhere to all safety rules and guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Education: Bachelor's in electrical or civil engineering or similar field from an accredited institution.
  • Experience: 5+ years of engineering or relevant field experience.
  • Licensure: FE is required, PE is preferred.
  • Engineering Expertise: Physical substation design, including substation electrical clearances, one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, physical layouts, section E elevations, bus configurations, bill of materials, equipment specifications, grounding and conduit plans and details, and other aspects of HV and EHV substation physical engineering.
  • An understanding of structural substation engineering including steel design, reinforced concrete design and foundations is a plus.
  • Knowledge: Relevant IEEE, NESC, ASCE, IBC, AISC, and RUS standards and codes for substation design.
  • Skills: Proficiency with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office Suite. Knowledge of design software such as SAP2000, L-pile, AutoCAD Civil 3D is a plus.
  • Abilities: Develop staff through mentoring and coaching. Possess excellent critical thinking skills. Commercial understanding of the engineering or construction industries. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written. Self-motivated, well-organized, and skilled decision-maker comfortable in a fast-paced design environment. Good interpersonal and people skills.

Work Environment: Office setting with some field work required.

Travel: Typical: 10 – 15%
