Additional Information About the Role

Integrated Spine is a newly integrated inpatient spine unit that consolidates neurologic and orthopedic spine patients into one location. This allows for high-quality, standardized care for all patients regardless of surgeon specialty. This unit is the newest addition to the surgical services team and provides an opportunity for nurses to help build this unique unit. Nurses on this unit will become adept in both the neurologic and orthopedic realms of nursing as they will care for patients who undergo a wide variety of surgical procedures. We specialize in treatment of degenerative spine conditions, traumatic spinal injuries, complex spinal reconstructive surgeries, spinal tumors, and spinal revision surgeries.

Role Purpose

Under the direction of the manager, plans, directs, and coordinates activities of a unit on a designated shift. Performs direct patient care as needed and functions as a clinical resource to nursing and support staff. Assesses, plans, evaluates, and documents the nursing process of the assigned unit as needed.

Responsibilities
  1. Facilitates identification and resolution of gaps in care from hospitalization, at discharge, and into the ambulatory care setting. Critically assesses patient data to proactively mitigate impending changes in condition and establishes consults to interprofessional team as appropriate.
  2. Leads the development and implementation of complex individual plans of care with defined goals in collaboration with other members of the interprofessional team and the patient, family, or caregiver in accordance with established guidelines and standards of nursing care. The plan of care reflects application of expert holistic clinical knowledge and skill to anticipate and prioritize complex care needs, anticipate barriers, incorporate interprofessional team and caregiver/family input, and identify opportunities to improve patient outcomes.
  3. Actively utilizes and champions scientific inquiry for evidence-based practices (e.g., participates in journal club, facilitates practice change based on new knowledge, recommends new standards of care or revisions to current standards, conducts literature searches to support unit or organizational goals, disseminates new knowledge obtained from relevant conferences or continuing education). Explores opportunities to advance nursing practice (e.g., supports community service health events, patient/family education groups, community advisory boards, serves as adjunct faculty, leadership in specialty organizations).
  4. Analyzes gaps in practice standards and provides feedback to peers in collaboration with leadership to enhance safe patient care. Leads the evaluation of the patient and family experience and adjusts care to improve patient satisfaction and quality of care.
  5. This is a safety-sensitive position; the ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner is an essential function of this job.
