Description

Carnegie Mellon University invites applications for a full-time,Teaching Track faculty position at the level of Assistant Professorin the area of Neurotechnology. This is a full-time facultyposition within CMU’s Teaching Track, a career-oriented, non-tenuretrack with renewable fixed terms and opportunities for promotion. The position will take on core teaching and administrativeresponsibilities in the new Master of Science in NeuralTechnologies (MiNT), a professional master’s program jointlyoffered by the Neuroscience Institute and the Department ofBiomedical Engineering. The MiNT program is designed to preparestudents at the intersection of neuroscience and engineering,combining foundational neuroscience with technical fluency in areassuch as neural interfaces, robotics, AI, and biomedicalsystems.

Successful candidates will have the skill sets to leadproject-based learning experiences that connect graduate studentswith real-world neurotechnology problems and external partners. Thecore role of the position will be to supervise team-based capstoneand sponsored projects, mentor professional master’s students, helpshape applied curricular experiences, and contribute to otherteaching needs in neuroscience and/or engineering. Additionalteaching assignments may include courses in neurotechnology, neuralengineering, systems neuroscience, computational neuroscience,biomedical instrumentation, signal processing, or related areas,depending on departmental needs and the candidate’s expertise. Thisposition is especially well-suited for candidates who are excitedby interdisciplinary education and by teaching students preparingfor technical and professional careers in neurotechnology.

Teaching Track faculty at Carnegie Mellon are full members of theacademic community. As in other CMU Teaching Track appointments,the successful candidate may contribute through teaching,curriculum development, student mentorship, and service. CMU’spolicy further provides that Teaching Track appointments conferfaculty status without tenure, and that the ranks are AssistantTeaching Professor, Associate Teaching Professor, and TeachingProfessor. Typical appointment terms under the policy are threeyears for Assistant Teaching Professor, three years initially andthen five years for subsequent reappointments at Associate TeachingProfessor, and five years for Teaching Professor.

TheNeuroscience Institute brings together research and educationspanning cognitive neuroscience, computational neuroscience,neurotechnology, and systems neuroscience. Qualifications

Candidates should have a background in both neuroscience andengineering, with demonstrated experience teaching at theuniversity level or in other relevant educational settings.Applicants whose expertise is aligned with neurotechnology andrelated interdisciplinary areas are strongly encouraged toapply. A Ph.D. in neuroscience, biomedical engineering, neuralengineering, bioengineering, electrical engineering, robotics,computer science, or a closely related field is required. Candidates with equivalent advanced training (e.g., MD) andsubstantial relevant professional experience may also be considered. The strongest applicants will have a record ofexcellence in teaching, mentoring, and interdisciplinaryengagement, along with the ability to supervise capstone orsponsored student projects that bridge neuroscience andengineering.

We are particularly interested in candidates who can contribute toapplied graduate education in areas such as neural interfaces,neuroengineering design, biomedical devices, computational methodsfor neural data, systems neuroscience, or other domains relevant toneurotechnology.
