Overview

Teaching Resident

A full-time, competitively paid position at a first-rate college preparatory school for boys. The Boys’ Latin of Philadelphia Teaching Fellowship attracts and prepares teaching candidates who will address disparities in public education in Philadelphia. The Fellowship, created in partnership with Drexel University and The Center for Black Educator Development, consists of a) Teaching Apprenticeship and b) Teaching Residency, which begins formal education and practice that will result in teacher certification.

The Teaching Resident supports teaching and learning under the direction of experienced, certified educators in the subject area in which the resident is pursuing certification. The resident gradually gains responsibility, plans and tailors courses of study, monitors and assists with academic work, and provides a safe environment conducive to learning and character development. The resident will pursue certification in the desired subject area at Drexel University as part of a year-long program covering foundational concepts and best practices in teaching. Responsibilities

• Support the mentor teacher in planning, developing, and delivering a college preparatory curriculum aligned with PA Common Core standards and best practices.
• Support the mentor teacher in assessing students regularly and using data to drive instruction, providing remediation and enrichment based on individual needs.
• Support the mentor teacher in communicating students’ progress to parents and school personnel with instructional and emotional support resources.
• Support the mentor teacher in building a classroom environment that is welcoming, academic, joyful, and safe.
• Commit to the school’s extended day structure, serving students outside of the regular school day, and teaching in the Leadership Academy, Saturday School, and summer academy programs.
• Enforce the student code of conduct and serve as a culture keeper of the Boys’ Latin mission.
• Complete the year-long certification program at Drexel University, which begins in June and ends the following May.
• Participate fully in professional development programming offered by Drexel University, the Center for Black Educator Development, and Boys’ Latin, while meeting regularly with a assigned mentor teacher.
• Prepare for and take all required certification examinations, leveraging support provided by Drexel University and Boys’ Latin.
