Academic Affairs Overview

Academic Affairs, led by the Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, comprises the university's colleges, schools and libraries, along with other academic support and administrative units. The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Educational Support and Faculty Development, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and the Assistant Dean for Business Operations and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences.

Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the underserved population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provide dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service-Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. In order to operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed.

Job Duties

The ECU SoDM is seeking a part-time accomplished dental educator to support integration of the foundational biomedical sciences across the four-year predoctoral dental education program. The SoDM predoctoral biomedical science curriculum is multidisciplinary and includes both normal and abnormal functions of the human body with an emphasis on the oro-facial complex along with the scientific principles that underpin modern clinical dental practice. The dental faculty educator will actively participate in instruction and ensure that graduates are competent in the application of biomedical science knowledge in the delivery of patient care. The dental faculty educator will bring both clinical and biomedical science expertise to include one or more of the following scientific disciplines: general medicine, gross anatomy (including head and neck anatomy), molecular biology, neuroscience, general pathology, physiology, and/or pharmacology.

• Didactic teaching in course modules related to gross anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, general pathology, and medicine taught within the SoDM predoctoral curriculum.
• Provide mentoring and oversight of problem-based learning within the Medical Case Seminar series and Foundations of Biomedical Sciences course.
• Coordinate the anatomy and cellular biology modules and gross anatomy laboratory sessions.
• Formulate new and innovative seminars or teaching methods to ensure continued learning and integration of the basic sciences within the clinical third and fourth years of the SoDM predoctoral dental curriculum.
• Didactic and/or simulation teaching in preclinical course modules related to the candidate's clinical field or discipline.
• Mentoring dental students in both the basic and clinical sciences related to teaching or research/scholarly activities.
• Active participation in the editing current content and developing new materials involved in the delivery of instruction. This includes manuals, references, and presentation media.
• Active participation in the developing and editing of content involved in the evaluation of student outcomes. This includes exams and Case-Based Learning (CBL).
• Participate in program development, review processes, curricular changes, accreditation activities, and self-studies.
• Participate in programs and activities for the American Dental Education Association (ADEA), American Association for Dental Oral and Craniofacial Research (AADOCR), International Association for Dental Research (IADR), and American Dental Association (ADA) to commensurate the role at the school.
• Represent the department at internal and external academic communities, alumni, business and industry, government, foundations, patient and practitioner groups, and the general community.
• Commitment to the Mission and Vision of the School of Dental Medicine including both a community-based and a generalist model of dental education.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Chair or Dean.

This is a Fixed term teaching position available at the title of Teaching Assistant Professor, Teaching Associate Professor, or Teaching Professor.

Minimum Education/Experience

• Minimum educational requirements include a doctoral degree, such as a DDS/DMD/MD, or PhD.
• Minimum of Five years of teaching experience at an accredited U.S. or Canadian dental school.
• Background and expertise in both the basic biological and clinical sciences.
• Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing; excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work cooperatively with colleagues, leaders, and staff at all levels; and the ability to work independently.
