General Qualifications
- 60 college‑course‑credit hours or state‑approved paraprofessional certification.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Proficiency in both the native bilingual language and English.
- Residency or familiarity with the surrounding community.
- Valid Illinois Paraprofessional License.
Responsibilities
- Assist the teacher in achieving classroom objectives by working individually with students, small groups, or whole classrooms.
- Create a well‑organized classroom environment that enables students to benefit from instructional programs and resources.
- Translate between the native bilingual language and English during classroom, meeting, or phone interactions and translate documents accurately.
- Administer, score, and record achievement and diagnostic tests recommended by the teacher for individual students.
- Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning of material or skills initially presented by the teacher.
- Assist the teacher in devising special strategies to reinforce material or skills tailored to students’ needs, interests, and abilities.
- Help students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher.
- Guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial tasks set up and assigned by the teacher.
- Assist with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
- Assist with large‑group activities such as drill work, reading aloud, and storytelling.
- Read to students, listen to students read, and participate in other oral communication activities.
- Assist students in the library or media center.
- Check notebooks, correct papers, supervise testing and make‑up work as assigned.
- Help students with clothing, lunch, snack, clean‑up, wash‑up, and toilet routines.
- Alert the regular teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
- Serve as the chief source of information and assistance for substitute teachers in the regular teacher’s absence.
- Maintain ethical behavior and confidentiality of student information in line with fully licensed teachers.
- Participate in in‑service training programs as assigned.
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

Working Conditions
Indoor classrooms with exposure to student noise, lawn mowing sounds, music, odors of food, grass, and possible communicable diseases; outdoor schoolyard, grounds, and field trips with exposure to varying temperatures.
