Summary

HCPA is a Title I charter school focused on supporting at-risk students. The Teaching Assistant – EL supports classroom teachers and promotes an environment conducive to learning and personal growth, based on the belief that all children can learn and reach their highest potential.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with instruction in study skills, reading, math, science, social studies, etc., under the supervision of a licensed teacher.
  • Support teachers by implementing instructional strategies tailored to student needs and using lesson plans.
  • Present lessons to groups to enable teachers to work with small groups.
  • Tutoring students individually or in small groups to reinforce learning and complete assignments.
  • Incorporate strategies from professional development to enhance instruction.
  • Evaluate and adjust instructional methods to improve effectiveness.
  • Assist students in using technology to enhance learning.
  • Collaborate across departments to meet student needs.
  • Support data collection and record-keeping related to attendance, grades, and behavior.
  • Maintain communication with families, including making calls and providing interpretation as needed.
  • Participate in professional development and team discussions.
  • Support a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Supervise student activities, including bus, breakfast, and lunch duties.

Engagement Activities

Participate in school activities outside of regular hours, such as open houses and events, by signing up via Sign-up Genius. Work over 40 hours requires prior approval.

Requirements
Required Qualifications
  • Understanding of curriculum and strategic planning.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including group presentations.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to analyze situations and adopt effective actions.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of school functions and procedures.
  • Ability to remain calm in emergencies and stressful situations.
  • Initiative and sound judgment within guidelines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in education or related field; coursework or experience may be considered.
  • Knowledge of Hmong language is helpful.
  • One to two years of classroom experience preferred.
  • First aid knowledge and experience working with diverse urban students are a plus.
Additional Information

Unofficial transcripts accepted at hire; official transcripts required within 30 days. Credential evaluation needed for international education. Duties may include outdoor activities and field trips. Work may involve evenings and weekends, with some travel.
