Job description

Teaching Assistant - 1:1 Support (Interest in Sports Essential) New

Teaching Assistant – 1:1 Support (Interest in Sports Essential)
Full-Time | Secondary School | Newport | September 2025 Start

Teaching Personnel are proud to be working closely with a secondary school in Newport to recruit a full-time Teaching Assistant to support a pupil on a 1:1 basis from September 2025 for the full academic year.

This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who is passionate about supporting young people with additional learning needs (ALN) and also has an active interest in sports, particularly football.

The Role

You will be providing 1:1 support for a male pupil with additional learning needs and challenging behaviour. This pupil benefits from structured support and responds well to a clear, consistent routine. To help with engagement and motivation, the school has integrated sports – especially football – as a reward-based activity within his personalised timetable.

Although the role includes physical activity during reward times, it is fundamentally classroom-based. You will support the pupil with day-to-day lessons, help manage behaviour positively, and guide his learning across subjects. Your role will be vital in helping him access the curriculum while also using sport to build trust, rapport, and motivation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work 1:1 with a pupil within the classroom environment
  • Provide behaviour and emotional support as required
  • Assist with academic tasks and lesson participation
  • Engage in reward-based activities (e.g. football) as part of the pupil’s behaviour plan
  • Liaise with teachers and inclusion staff to implement individual strategies
  • Maintain consistent boundaries and build a positive, trusting relationship

The Ideal Candidate Will:

  • Have experience working with children or young people with ALN or behavioural challenges (desirable)
  • Have a genuine interest in sport – football in particular
  • Be calm, confident, and consistent in approach
  • Be resilient, proactive, and a strong team player
  • Be able to support learning in a classroom setting
  • Have GCSEs in English and Maths (or equivalent)

This role would suit someone with experience in education, youth work, sports coaching, or mentoring – especially those looking to make a real difference in the life of one student.

  • Hours: Full-Time, Term-Time Only
  • Start Date: September 2025
  • Contract Length: Fixed Term – 1 Academic Year

This is a unique opportunity to combine your interest in education and sport to support a young person who thrives with the right guidance.
