Job summary

Cleveland SCORES is seeking a Teaching Artist to support its poetry writing program. This contract role focuses on high-quality delivery, helping poets-athletes express themselves through writing and performance.

Responsibilities include site visits, coordinating materials, supporting the Poetry SLAM, and stepping in as a coach during after-school hours. A strong commitment to youth and humor is essential.

Job description

The Teaching Artist position is a contract position that assists with the writing (poetry) program. This position helps ensure that all poetry programming is running effectively and is a high-quality experience for our poet-athletes.

The Teaching Artist is responsible for the following:

• Support the Curriculum Director with the poetry programming
• Visit program sites to ensure high-quality program delivery and implementation of the poetry curriculum
• Conduct visits with primarily 3rd - 5th grade programs to help with writing of poems and preparing for the annual Poetry SLAM
• Assist with the distribution and collection of program materials, supplies, and communication.
• Help run the Poetry SLAM event in November
• Step in as a coach during after-schoo program as needed
• Actively participate in annual goal-setting, initiatives, and day-to-day functioning with a team-centered approach; be open to giving and receiving constructive feedback; be open to fulfilling necessary jobs or roles as needed

Requirements: The successful candidate will be a team player who is committed to the mission and has extensive experience working with youth. Demonstrated ability to handle writing/teaching activities; a sense of humor; excellent written and oral communication skills; excellent organizational ability; and the ability to work under pressure. Candidates must have access to a car as program sites are located throughout the city.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:

• Passionate about the Cleveland SCORES mission, public education, and working with underrepresented communities to provide access to quality after-school activities
• Highly motivated to continue improving the quality of Cleveland SCORES’s youth development programming
• Excellent interpersonal skills with all stakeholders that make up the Cleveland SCORES family, including the youth we serve and coaches
• Willingness and ability to learn quickly and pick up new skills
• Candidates should own a car, as program sites are throughout the city.
• Candidates must be able to lift/carry 25+ pounds (program set-up)
• Candidate must pass a background check
• 21 years or older
• Must be flexible, dependable, and have a good sense of humor.
• Experience with creative writing or poetry preferred
