Overview
Under the supervision of the Principal or other designated administrator, the Special Education Teacher develops and implements an instructional program that effectively meets the individualized needs of each student with a disability, assesses and evaluates student performance, modifies instructional activities as appropriate, and maintains an understanding of local, state, and federal mandates governing special education programs.
Responsibilities
- Support student learning by promoting positive interaction, encouraging self-motivation and self-direction, adapting instructional presentations to student needs, and communicating lesson objectives.
- Maintain organized instruction plans, utilize varied materials and resources, and employ effective teaching techniques both in and out of class.
- Monitor student progress, inform appropriate persons, and complete required reports promptly and accurately.
- Maintain a neat, safe environment; comply with school policies and regulations, including confidentiality guidelines; and perform related duties as assigned.
- Engage in professional development, respond promptly to requests for information, and serve as a role model for students, colleagues, and the public.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, or education related to specific special education area to which assigned.
- Hold or be eligible for a valid teaching license meeting Commonwealth of Virginia requirements with a Special Education endorsement.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
- Work environment inside a classroom, may include outside activities, moderate noise, controlled temperatures, with no exposure to chemicals or negative air quality elements.
- Light work requiring exertion of up to 20 pounds to move or lift objects.
- Required abilities: standing or sitting for prolonged periods, repetitive hand and wrist movements, forceful movements, visual identification, spoken and written communication, logical decision making.
