Teacher's Assistant in Scarsdale, NY, US

Mission: To encourage the social, emotional, and cognitive development of the child by providing a comprehensive Montessori education, cultivating independent thought and foundational skills as well as awareness of their environment; empathy for others, and social ease and confidence.

Assistant Teachers are responsible for assisting the classroom teacher in the general supervision and management of a class of children between the ages of 18 months and five years. Yellow Acorn Montessori has a toddler program (18 months – 36 months) and a pre-school program (3 years – 5 years). Assistant Teachers must have a warm and friendly personality, be sensitive to the feelings and needs of others, be able to relate well to children, and be willing to fulfill responsibilities in accordance with the school’s educational philosophy. Additionally, Assistant Teachers must have a can-do attitude!

Assistant Teachers must have a minimum of a High School Diploma (Child Development Associate credential, associate or bachelor’s degree strongly preferred) and have experience with children. All course study and experience will be verified.

Responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to the following:

• Assisting in planning and implementing the daily program, sharing ideas, and coordinating classroom responsibilities with the teacher
• Provide a safe physical and emotional environment with appropriate expectations and limits for children
• Be able to respond appropriately in an emergency
• Helping children to become aware of their roles as integral members of a group
• Rendering staff support to all classrooms and staff when necessary
• Assisting in planning and preparing the learning environment, setting up interest centers, and preparing needed materials and supplies
• Being responsible for the orderly arrangement, appearance, décor, and learning environment of the classroom
• Working as a team with all staff when necessary
• Assisting in the ongoing evaluation procedures needed to assess the developmental levels of the children
• Supervising children on the playground, in classrooms, and on field trips
• Supervising the classroom when the teacher is out of the room
• Communicating information about children to teacher in charge regarding health, safety, problems, concerns, etc.
• Helping with the general housekeeping tasks including preparing, serving, and cleaning up after snacks, lunches, parties, and other activities
• Keeping daily attendance records
• Assuming an equal share of the joint housekeeping responsibilities of the staff
• Changing diapers and/or assisting children with toileting as needed
• Attending all staff meetings and recommended training programs and conferences
• Arranging with the Director for vacations, time off, or early leave
• Maintaining ongoing communication with the head teacher covering such topics as classroom curriculum, responsibilities, individual children, parents, and other topics related to the classroom
• Participating in required and recommended training programs, conferences, courses, and other aspects of professional development
