Job summary

The Olympia School District is seeking a licensed High School Teacher to develop students’ academic skills, implement district curricula, and monitor progress in a safe, engaging classroom.

This 0.2 FTE One Year Only position focuses on a Freshman Fitness class with a schedule Mon/Tue/Thu 2:30–3:25, Wed 1:53–2:35, Fri 2:41–3:25, with prep time added. Strong candidates will bring restorative practices and culturally responsive education experience.

Qualifications

Job Purpose Statement/s:

The job of "Teacher - High School” is done for the purpose/s of developing students’ academic skills through academic courses of study and implementing District approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addressing specific educational needs of students; providing a safe and optimal learning environment, and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.

This position is a 0.2 FTE for One Year Only.

Secondary certification for Health and Fitness required.

This position is for one Freshman Fitness class to be held during sixth period, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 2:30 pm - 3:25 pm, Wednesday 1:53 pm - 2:35 pm and Friday 2:41 pm - 3:25 pm. Prep time will need to be added. Preferred candidates will have training in Restorative Practices and Culturally Responsive Education and strong classroom management skills and collaboration with colleagues.

Employees will receive vacation leave, paid holidays and additional compensation beyond their base salary as outlined in their Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

Essential Job Functions:

• Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of supporting teacher’s expectations, developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
• Assesses student for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding students’ progress, expectations, goals, etc.
• Assists other teachers for the purpose of implementing curriculum.
• Collaborates with school personnel, parents and various community agencies for the purpose of improving the quality of student outcomes, developing solutions and planning curriculum.
• Demonstrates methods required to perform assignments and/or skills (e.g. lab experiments, athletic techniques, etc.) for the purpose of providing the students with the necessary skills to perform the tasks safely and/or accurately.
• Directs instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student aides for the purpose of providing an effective school program and addressing the needs of individual students.
• Instructs students for the purpose of improving their success in academics through a defined course of study.
• Monitors student activities (e.g. classroom, lunch, grounds, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.
• Prepares teaching materials and reports (e.g. grades, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of implementing lesson plans and providing documentation of teacher and student progress.
• Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to Education Code, district and/or school policies.

Other Job Functions:

• Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
• Participates in various meetings (e.g. parent conferences, in-service training, site meetings, etc.) for the purpose of receiving and/or providing information and/or meeting credential requirements.
• Participate in the growth of an effective school climate that creates a learning environment sensitive to diverse socioeconomic groups.
• Facilitate, plan, organize and implement flexible classroom and leadership curriculum in a community based environment.
• Promote and model an environment that fosters high expectations, performance, respect and dignity of all students.
• Demonstrate ability to further integrate technologies available, such as grading software through continuing professional development.
• Work cooperatively, energetically, and productively within a CTE Department., while fostering parental involvement.
• Lead and/or participate in CTE Advisory Board meetings and local Tech Prep meetings.
• Energetic, motivated, positive individual focused on CTE Communication Technology Program to prepare students with employable skills.

Job Requirements - Qualifications:

• Experience Required: Prior job-related experience.
• Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required: Skills to motivate students communicate with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds, direct support personnel, evaluate performance.
• Knowledge of age appropriate teaching methods, state curriculum framework, education code, appropriate instructional subjects.
• Abilities to stand and walk for prolonged periods, perform a variety of specialized and responsible tasks, maintain records, establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents, other school personnel, meet schedule and deadlines. Significant physical abilities include lifting/carrying, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, and near/far visual acuity/depth perception/accommodation/ field of vision.
• Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required: Teaching Credential for appropriate level of instruction and/or subjects; Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance.
