Job summary

Springfield School District 186 is seeking a Teacher of the Visually Impaired / Orientation & Mobility Instructor to support students ages 3 to 21 across multiple school sites in Springfield, Illinois. This full-time role requires traveling between buildings to deliver specialized instruction and participate in IEP meetings.

Working under the Special Education Supervisor, you will perform functional vision assessments, recommend adaptive materials and technology, and train staff to help students

Qualifications

• Valid Illinois Professional Educator’s License with Blind, Visually Impaired endorsement.
• Certification through the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation & Education Professionals (ACVREP).

Responsibilities

• Provide educational services to students who are visually impaired ages 3 to 21.
• Complete functional vision assessments and written reports.
• Conduct evaluations of the orientation and mobility needs of visually impaired students, and written reports.
• Facilitate students in acquiring the ability to move about and travel safely within and beyond the school community.
• Participate in IEP meetings and assist the team in determining education needs related to vision.
• Recommend specialized materials, equipment, and technology to meet the students’ educational needs.
• Provide training on materials, equipment, and technology to students and staff, as needed.
• Communicate with teachers about modifying instructions to meet students’ educational needs.

REPORTS TO: Special Education Supervisor

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Communicate and plan with teachers about the modification of instructions to meet thestudents’ educational needs
• Adapt materials for students who are visually impaired
• Communicate with Special Education Case Managers and Department Chairs
