Position start date: FY27

The Teacher of the Visually Impaired provides specialized educational support to students who are blind or have low vision. These educators ensure students can access the standard curriculum and learn essential life skills.

Visually Impaired Teacher Qualifications & Skills
  • Hold a valid Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC) certification with a Vision Impairment or TVI endorsement. Certification in teaching students with visual impairments
  • Minimum of Bachelor's Degree in the field of education
  • Experience working with children or adolescents in an educational setting
  • Knowledgeable of resources in the state of Georgia to support students with visual impairments (Georgia Instructional Materials Center; Smokey Powell)
  • Conduct educational evaluations to determine possible eligibility in the area of Vision Impairment including Functional Vision and Learning Media assessments
  • Develop and implement individualized education programs (IEPs) for students with visual impairments
  • Familiarity with legal requirements and educational policies related to special education, specifically as it relates to visual impairments
  • Proficiency in Braille and other tactile learning tools
  • Knowledge of assistive technology and adaptive educational software
  • Provide direct instruction in academic subjects, Braille literacy, and use of assistive technologies
  • Instruct students in basic orientation and mobility skills
  • Offer training and resources for other educators, staff, and parents
  • Maintain detailed records of students' progress and educational outcomes
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices and new technologies
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to adapt curriculum and classroom materials
  • Collaborate effectively with the multidisciplinary team and IEP team to support individual student needs.
